PUPILS from a Newquay school celebrated St Piran’s Day to show how proud they are to live in Cornwall.

More than 300 schoolchildren from Bishops Primary Academy enjoyed a pasty lunch before taking part in a parade at Trenance Gardens and Boating Lake.

They received plenty of beeps from passing motorists as they made their way to the gardens where they paraded and waved their Cornish flags.

The children learnt all about St Piran before coming together to sing some traditional sea shanties including The Wellerman, Cornwall My Home, Lamorna and Drunken Sailor.

Year five teacher Abbi Jessap said: “Our wonderful pupils celebrated St Piran's Day in true Cornish style.

“Starting with a scrumptious pasty lunch before proudly parading down to Trenance Gardens, waving their Cornish flags high.

“It was a joy to see them embracing the spirit of Cornwall, learning about our rich history, and honouring St Piran, the patron saint of tin miners.

“The air was filled with the sound of sea shanties as the children sang their hearts out, celebrating our proud maritime heritage. From tales of old to traditions that live on, it was a day full of Cornish pride and community spirit.

“A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this special day one to remember.

“Kernow bys vyken.”
