SHOPPERS at a superstore in St Austell have voted for a local school to benefit from £1,500 of funding.

Customers at the town’s Tesco store were invited earlier this year to vote for one of three local initiatives each time they had finished their shopping.

Penrice Academy came out on top in the Tesco Stronger Starts poll and has now spent the money on new outdoor education equipment.

Penrice outdoor education co-ordinator Alison Penrose said: “We are thrilled to have been selected for this funding, which will make a big difference in the lives of our students.

“Outdoor education plays a vital role in developing teamwork, resilience and a love for the environment, and the new equipment will give our students even more opportunities to learn and grow outside the classroom.”

The school has bought a range of equipment that will enhance its outdoor education programmes.

A spokesperson said: “The funds have been used to purchase essential new tents and backpacks, providing a significant boost to the school’s commitment to enriching students’ learning experiences and encouraging active outdoor learning.

“Penrice Academy’s Ten Tors and Duke of Edinburgh programmes have been an important part of the school’s curriculum, allowing students to build practical skills, improve their wellbeing and learn about environmental stewardship.

“The addition of this equipment will help continue to cultivate an atmosphere of exploration, collaboration and environmental responsibility.

“The school would like to express its gratitude to the local community for their support in making this possible.”

Assistant headteacher Ben Wright said: “We are so thankful to everyone who voted and showed their support for Penrice Academy. This is a wonderful example of how communities can come together to make a positive impact on the lives of young people.”
