Truro Lions ran their annual Christmas hamper draws at the city’s pannier market in December, and also held cash collections at Tesco’s Garras Wharf store. Both events were very successful, raising a combined £2,156 for St Petrocs and other local good causes.
Lion President Mike Kalis presented a cheque for £1,800 to St Petrocs at the Lions’ monthly club meeting last Thursday, after the charity’s Community Champion Hugh Murrell gave a about its activities to help Cornwall’s homeless population.
The winners of the three prizes from the Pannier Market draws were Frank and Sue Found from Veryan, Valerie Jones from Truro and Sue Kemp from Falmouth.
Thanks were given to Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose and Lampiers Butchers for their contributions for the hampers, to John Roach and E Cigs R Us at the Pannier Market, to Tesco for enabling the cash collections, and to Lions, their partners and friends for the voluntary efforts that enabled the fundraising to take place.
In addition, Truro Lions make donations every Christmas to a variety of local causes, totalling £4,000 in 2024. Recipients included Cascade Theatre Group, CHBN Radio, CHAOS Group, Cornwall Accessible Activities Programme, Cornwall Blood Bikes, Devon and Cornwall Food Action Group, Mercy Rescue Trust, Cornwall Refuge Trust, Cornwall Youth Choir, Invictus Trust, LARF Cornwall, Samaritans Truro, Shelterbox HQ Truro, Truro Memory Café and Truro Homeless Action Group (THAG).
Also at the club meeting, vice district governor Richard Allen presented Truro Lion Bob Moore with a certificate of appreciation signed by the Duchess of Edinburgh Sophie Wessex, in recognition of his 50 years of service to the organisation.
Bob was originally badged at Trowbridge Lions in 1974, and has also given service to clubs in Boston, Lincolnshire and St Austell before joining Truro Lions.
