A green space in Camborne which used to have a reputation for antisocial behaviour has had a makeover thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers.

Located between Rectory Road and the Parish Churchyard in Camborne, it is estimated that nearly 40,000 trips are made on foot through 'the Spinney' every year.

Thanks to the new charity trustees and volunteers of The Spinney Doorstep Green, this will be a much improved experience. Perran Moon MP will be reopening the space at a grand reopening event this Saturday at 10.30am.

In April, the charity was awarded a grant from the Community Levelling Up Programme and since then hundreds of hours of time and effort has been put in by volunteers. They have completed regular litter picking sessions and extensive new planting, helping helped to transform the space.

A new set of gates means the area can be closed off when tree works are undertaken and is an artistic feature which continues an ivy leaf theme from fencing around the site.

Philip Hills, the new charity treasurer, has also pitched in to help. He said: “The storms last winter brought down a mature ash tree and made quite a mess, but all the trees have been made safe now. Now we have put in lots of new trees, shrubs and flowering plants. I'm really looking forward to seeing them come out in spring and summer.”

Local ‘Rotary’ club members volunteered with Camborne Youth Council, planting lots of crocus bulbs which should give a carpet of purple under the trees in spring, all part of a Rotary Club campaign to help end Polio.

Philip added: “Our aims were to keep the Spinney a treasured resource for the community as well as for the woodland wildlife, I hope as many of you as can make it come down on Saturday and help celebrate this lovely natural space.”

Councillor Zoe Fox said: “It is incredible what has been achieved so far, but there is always more to do - the Charity is keen for new ideas and new volunteers. Your help and support is needed to keep improving things, every day and into the future. Please do get involved if you can.
