Cornwall Council wants to site ten modular homes near Truro’s Waitrose store to provide accommodation for vulnerable young people under threat of homelessness.

If planning permission is granted, the one-bedroom SoloHaus units – similar to homeless pods seen at various sites throughout Cornwall – would be installed on land near Truro Cattle Market, Tregurra park and ride and residential areas to the east, south and west.

The homes would be for young adults, aged 18 and 25, transitioning from children’s services and may include those leaving care. There would also be a residents’ hub and management office, and plant rooms to heat the units.

The Young Persons Scheme forms part of Cornwall Council’s commitment to reduce homelessness in response to the Government’s ‘Everyone In’ directive.

It was commented on previously at a pre-app stage, but the site layout was determined unsuitable. Construction consultancy Kendall Kingscott has re-imagined the site and developed a sensitive response to create a community feel, according to a planning report.

The report adds: “The site position allows for good public transport into Truro city centre and benefits from a nearby large car park which reduces the need for parking on the site.”
