Works on improvements at the harbour in Mevagissey are progressing.

During a visit, St Austell and Newquay MP Steve Double and Cornwall Councillors were able to learn more about the project.

Mr Double said: “It was good to visit Mevagissey Harbour to see the progress made on the accessible ramp on Island Quay, as well as to get confirmation that the Harbour Trust have been successful with their application for £900,000 towards flood defences for the outer harbour.

“Both schemes have only been made possible via the Government's Shared Prosperity Fund, delivered by Cornwall Council, and I have been pleased to support these bids.

“I look forward to seeing both schemes completed to improve the accessibility and resilience of this vital part of Mevagissey.”

Cllr Louis Gardner, Cornwall cabinet member responsible for the economy, said: “It is inspiring to see work get under way in Mevagissey on the first of two projects funded by the Shared Prosperity Fund, which will help to secure the long-term future of the harbour.

“The harbour is such an intrinsic part of Mevagissey’s economy and identity that when these two projects, worth well over a million pounds came forward, it was clear that, along with the Environment Agency, we had to help fund them.

“With Shared Prosperity Funding, we have been able to get right to the heart of these local issues and support local communities in the delivery of some incredible projects such as this.”

Cllr James Mustoe, the Cornwall Councillor for Mevagissey and St Austell Bay, said: “I was pleased to meet with Steve and Louis, along with Mevagissey harbourmaster Andrew Trevarton, to see the progress made on the ramp at Island Quay.

“This will make waters immediately off the harbour more accessible for canoeists and stand up paddleboarders and increase the leisure offer from Mevagissey.

“I have also worked hard with the Harbour Trust to make the case for the £900,000 for the harbour resilience project to Cornwall Council and it is great to see this significant sum awarded, which will see the heart of Mevagissey protected for years to come.”
