WORK to give Newquay’s most popular play park a £178,000 makeover is set to start on Monday (February 24).
A nautical themed play park is being built at Trenance Play Park following a public consultation.
The design includes a new junior and toddler area, which would include a Pinta play ship, an integrated carousel, a swinging play zone with two toddler seats and two flat seats.
There will also be a stand-up seesaw, a Mary toddler play ship, a slide, whale climbing unit, steel zipline, dolphin play panel, an underwater diver play panel as well as accessible picnic benches.
The upgraded play park will also include an all-weather surface as the area suffers from drainage issues.
The play facility was awarded £100,000 of investment from Cornwall Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy Fund and some other funds from the unitary authority.
Funds were applied for to upgrade the play park next to the Heron Tennis Centre following concerns the facility is falling into disrepair.
A spokesperson for Cormac said: “Acting on behalf of Cornwall Council we are announcing upcoming improvement works to Trenance Play Area.
“The works will include the installation of new play equipment and resurfacing of the play area.
“Please note due to the construction works, the playground will be closed to the public for approximately eight weeks, commencing from Monday, February 24 weather permitting.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate people’s understanding as we improve the play area for everyone.
“We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation.”
Four companies tendered to install the new equipment.
Cornwall Council was due to work with Newquay Town Council on the project but have found all the money required to go ahead with the scheme themselves.
