At 11 o'clock a two-minute silence was held for the school community to reflect on the significance of this day.
Last week students in all year groups received special assemblies in the school hall which aimed to educate the younger generation about the impact of war and the importance of peace. It covered the events of D-Day and the stories of soldiers who served in the Second World War were also shared.
The students learned that 7,000 ships, 2,000 aircrafts, 800 gliders and 160,000 men travelled from England to the beaches of Normandy for D-Day. They also heard about a local connection as one of the locations used to load and transport people and equipment for the D-Day landing was Trebah Beach near Falmouth. The students were then encouraged to think about different ways to remember, from wearing a poppy or marking a piece of art to visiting a memorial.
Three students, who are cadets with Air Squadron 147 Camborne, paraded in Camborne Remembrance Service and Treslothan Church Remembrance Service. Cd Endean was chosen for a reading and Cd Smeeth and Cd Carter were chosen to lay crosses. They have also been selling poppy's at Camborne Tesco's over the last 3 weeks.
Nick Ward, principal at Pool Academy said: “Remembrance Day is a chance for everyone to reflect on the courage and selflessness of those who have served in the armed forces. For our students, it’s also an opportunity to learn about history and honour those who sacrificed their lives, while reflecting on the role of the armed forces today. I am so proud of how our students and staff came together to show their respect.”
