ABANDONED TVs and a single wellington boot were among the items collected from the streets of Truro and Newham during a two-day clean-up.

Businesses, organisations and residents joined forces for the eighth Truro City Clean Up event, organised by Truro BID in association with Newham BID, took place on Friday and Saturday. Around 80 people took part and 71 bags of rubbish were collected over the two days, as well as three large TVs abandoned on Daubuz Moor and Newham.

Work began with a litter pick along Tregolls Road, followed by cable-tie cutting, sticker removal and sign washing in the city centre. There were also two afternoon litter picks in Kenwyn and Newham.

Businesses and organisations involved included LiveWest, Marks & Spencer, Stephens Scown and The Alverton Hotel. Newham participants included St Petrocs, iSight Cornwall, Enterprise Cars, MJ Medical, Biffa, Geothermal Engineering, Kartha Commercial Cleaning and Cornish Mutual.

Mel Richardson, BID Manager for Newham, said: “We're very grateful to all the business volunteers who have made Newham look and feel tidier and who have taken pride in their local area."

On Saturday, the Friends of Daubuz Moor, the Friends of Coosebean and the Friends of Newbridge Park focused on litter removal in their green spaces. Trelander & St Clements Community Association and the Hendra Community Group arranged litter picks in their neighbourhoods, while the Sea Cadets tackled Malpas and Boscawen Park.

Damien Richards, community development officer at Truro City Council, said: “Community litter picks are more than keeping an area clean – it’s a way to bring the community together. We often have people take part that have never met before with a broad age range from the very young to the much older.”

Truro BID is planning its ninth City Clean Up for spring 2026.
