NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO (WEST)
Camborne 59 Loughborough 28
Camborne maintained their four points advantage at the top of National Two West by running in nine tries to defeat Loughborough in an entertaining game at the Recreation Ground.
With the wind and slope in their favour the Students started brightly and eventually took the lead with a close range converted try.
The Cherry and Whites levelled on the half hour when a Kyle Moyle kick ahead was hacked on by Alex Ducker who duly won the race to the ball in the in goal area. Full-back Moyle’s conversion levelled matters at 7-7.
A flurry of action in the period leading up to the interval then first saw Loughborough move 21-7 up with a brace of converted tries before ‘Town’ hit back swiftly.
First, number eight Aden Brassington broke off a maul close in using his strength to dot down before left wing Ducker showed his class, sparking a bout of handling which took play to the try line. From there, Ben Priddey duly drove over from close range for Moyle to convert and a 19-21 half-time scoreline.
On the resumption Camborne soon capitalized on the slope taking the lead when Moyle’s kick was gathered by Harry Larkins who made ground before slipping the ball inside to lock Chris Fuca who romped over near the posts. Moyle knocked over the regulation conversion.
The home pack were now well on top and when the Students were shunted off their own scrum ball on 49 minutes, CJ Boyce found Josh Matavesi whose deft chip gave Ducker the opportunity to run on to touchdown another bouncing ball for Moyle to convert.
Matters immediately got worse for Loughborough when centre Matavesi received the restart and charged downfield handing on to a rampaging Jordan Nicholls who made ground before sending hooker Priddey clear on a 30-metre run to the line. Moyle’s conversion made it 40-21.
Although the visitors bagged a deserved try bonus point score on the hour, Camborne were not to be denied and Priddey then completed a hat-trick from a catch and drive. Moyle added the goal and soon after created the opportunity for man of the match Ducker to also bag his third try of the afternoon.
Late on the Cherry and Whites added further gloss to their victory when Priddey and Boyce both went close in the scoreboard corner and inevitably the final opportunity fell to Priddey who bagged yet another try. Fly-half Sam Walker stroked over an excellent conversion to complete the scoring.
Elsewhere in the division on Saturday, Redruth continued their fine run of form with a 20-7 success over strugglers Exeter University at the Topsham.
Tries from hooker Jarrod Hambly and prop Luke Barnes which were added to by conversions from Dean Wills and Dan Rutter, plus two Rutter penalties ensured four points headed back to West Cornwall.
The Reds, who are now sixth and just three points behind third-placed Taunton, welcome Old Redcliffians on Saturday (2pm).
