Southern Football League Division One round-up – Saturday, April 12
MOUSEHOLE produced a season’s best result as they Yate Town 2-1 to solidify themselves in the promotion race.
The Seagulls went into the day fourth, but with several teams not far behind, could really do with a result against a Yate side that went into the day top of the pile.
But Maxwell Hill’s 87th minute ensured Jake Ash’s men know that two wins from their final three games will ensure a top five finish and with it an invitation to the end of season play-offs.
Yate arrived in West Cornwall in a race with Evesham United for the crown, and fell behind inside nine minutes as Tim Nixon poked home after the visitors failed to deal with a free-kick.
Lucas Tomlinson drew the Somerset side level six minutes before the break, but just as it looked like they would make the long trip home with a point to keep them top, Hill’s header sent the majority of the 300-plus crowd home happy.
To make matters worse for Yate, Evesham won 1-0 at Westbury United to go ahead on goal difference in the race for the sole automatic slot.
Mousehole’s Cornish rivals Helston Athletic remain in serious danger of an immediate return to Step Five after being thrashed 7-0 at Shaftesbury Town.
The Blues headed up to Dorset four points behind Larkhall Athletic, and although the Bath-based outfit lost, time is running out.
They sit four points behind Larkhall with three games left.
Falmouth Town are mathematically safe after Helston’s defeat, but their push for a top-half finish took a blow with two defeats.
On Tuesday night (April 8) they lost 1-0 to play-off chasing Bishops Cleeve at Bickland Park, before being beaten 3-0 at another side hoping to reach the top five, Exmouth Town, on Saturday.
