SWPL PREMIER WEST

St Day 0 Newquay 4

NEWQUAY are back on course for promotion to the Western League following an emphatic victory over St Day at a floodlit Vogue Park on Wednesday night.

The result moved them to within a point of leaders Liskeard with two games to go, while the Blues have one match left.

The destination of the trophy may yet come down to goal difference and the Peppermints now have a plus 19 advantage.

After a hugely frustrating goalless draw at Sticker on Saturday, Newquay’s luck changed inside 10 minutes at St Day as Aaron Dilley’s powerful strike took a deflection to leave keeper Harry Salmon wrong-footed as the ball crashed into the net.

Then Callam McOnie took to the centre stage, turning in from the right at the edge of the penalty area before firing a left foot shot past Salmon to make it 2-0 after 17 minutes.

Within a minute Phil Lowry had a great opportunity to add a third goal but sent his shot across the six-yard box and just wide of the far post.

Referee Paul Kempen called for St Day’s new floodlights to be turned on after 28 minutes and there were cheers and applause when Vogue Park lit up for the first time.

Cam Turner then saw a trademark free-kick take a deflection before hitting the post and on the half hour Lowry played McOnie through but this time his shot drifted wide.

Newquay suffered a setback in the 34th minute when Jacob Grange, who had made a bright start, was forced off with a hamstring strain to be replaced by Dan Carne.

McOnie continued his impressive first half with a 39th minute shot which Salmon turned away for a corner and then he got on the end of a Tom Shepherd cross with a glancing header which went just wide.

But he eventually got his second goal and Newquay’s fourth in the 58th minute after a clever through ball from Carne left him to finish confidently.

The scoring was completed 15 minutes from time when Lucas Potts, who had just come on, fired a low shot from 18 yards which went under Salmon’s body into the net.

Newquay could have added several more goals while at the other end Brodie Cole made sure of a clean sheet with two spectacular saves in the last 10 minutes to deny a St Day side who never stopped battling.

So it’s on to Penzance on Saturday for the Peppermints, before they complete their season at home to Wendron United on Maundy Thursday evening.

Four points from those two games would ensure promotion because Liskeard can only reach 72 points if they win their last match at Millbrook on Good Friday morning.
