TODAY we are on the invigorating West Cornwall coast near St Just and Pendeen as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.

Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Our lovely tour around Cornwall has recently seen us visiting Land’s End, Sennen Cove and Cape Cornwall. Before that, we had been making our way along the superb south coast of the county, in the latter stages exploring Porthcurno, Mousehole and Mount’s Bay.

“For the latest part of the tour, we are heading along the extensive northern coast of Cornwall.”

The area around St Just and Pendeen takes in the three activities that Cornwall was most famous for in the past - farming, fishing and mining. Today, of course, it also encompasses the fourth strand with which the county is greatly associated - tourism.

The district in West Cornwall has gained the label of the Tin Coast and there are several reminders of the mining past that tourists can see or visit.

The coastline is truly spectacular, while the inland granite uplands offer a pleasing backdrop.

The coast here can be treacherous and the Pendeen Lighthouse to the north of Pendeen helps to keep shipping safe. In the past, many vessels came to grief, particularly around Gurnards Head to the north east.

Some of the cliffs on this coast are popular with climbers.

Next time, we will be in St Ives which is consistently voted as one of the top holiday places to visit not only in Britain but also in Europe.

Our extensive tour around Cornwall, visiting well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from sandy beaches, remote moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to historic towns, pretty villages, mining relics and visitor attractions.
