The annual three-day West of England Steam Engine Society Rally took place at Stithians Showground on August 16 to 18.
From steam engine trailer rides to vintage wood sawing, trade stands to heavy horse working demonstrations there was something for everyone at the long-established rally. A wide variety of ring events and displays around the showground went on continuously throughout the three days.
The 68th edition of the rally welcomed a large selection of steam engines, vintage cars, motorbikes, tractors, military vehicles, stationary engines, alongside hosting live music, fair organs, heavy horses, children’s entertainment and plenty of craft and catering stalls.
The countryside area saw rural craft traditions of thatching, wood turning, forge work and more take place, while the working area hosted horse-powered implements, stone crushing, threshing and wood sawing that visitors could all see. Children could experience the fun of the fair with dodgems, waltzers, a roller coaster and an inflatable circus among other treats.
On the Saturday evening, the stationary section lit up for charity, helping to raise money for Marie Curie and Blood Bikes by creating a beautiful display for visitors to enjoy, the night also saw the hotly contested the sheaf pitching competition take place. Papa Do Swing performed in the beer tent during the evening while Straw Dogs took to the stage on Friday night.
The West of England Steam Engine Society (WESES) which hosts the event was founded in 1955 and is one of the oldest Steam Preservation Societies in the UK. Their chosen charity for this year’s event was Cornwall Hospice Care.
