THE countdown is on for Newquay’s Christmas lights switch on.
The eagerly anticipated event will be held at the main stage on the Killacourt bandstand on Friday, November 29, at 6.30pm.
The Christmas lights switch-on will be followed by a fireworks display over the harbour at 6.45pm.
A Christmas market and bar will be opening on the Killacourt at 3pm. There will be Christmas carols with Oll an Gwella on the market stage at 4pm.
Will Eason Band will perform on the Killacourt bandstand at 5pm and the Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys at 6.50pm. The Christmas Market and Bar will close at 9pm.
There will be lots of festivities staged at the Killacourt on Saturday, November 30.
The Christmas Market and bar will open at 10am. A crafts workshop will be held on the market stage between 10am and 12pm.
Darcie Albrighton will be performing at 12.30pm, Jue Hurworth at 1.45pm, Bow River at 3pm and there will be a children’s disco with Chris Gerry at 4.30pm. The market and bar will close at 9pm.
There will also be festive events staged on the Killacourt on Sunday, December 1.
The Christmas Market and bar will open at 10am and kids crafts will be staged on the market stage. Santa’s Grotto will be open from 10.30am and 3pm, which is booking only. The market and bar will close at 6pm.
A spokesperson for Newquay BID said: “We are excited to be bringing a fabulously festive market to the Killacourt alongside Newquay Town Council, as we celebrate the start of Christmas in Newquay with the Christmas light switch on.
“There will be fireworks, free rides for the little ones as well as music and a market. The market will run until Sunday and there are other festive activities to look forward.
“The East Street business community is holding an event on Saturday, December 14 and Miracle on Fore Street will be back on December 22.”
Newquay’s Christmas lantern parade will be taking place at its new home in Trenance Valley for the very first time on Friday, November 22, at 6pm.
Young people will parade their lanterns through Trenance Valley to the cottages.
It will be followed by the Trenance Cottages Light Switch On, where the community can stay and enjoy music, food and entertainment at Trenance Cottages, including storytellers in the trees, The Newquay Rowing Club Singers, as well as James Dundon from Radio Cornwall, who will be compering the event on the night.
Blystra Arts team is visiting almost every Newquay school to deliver dedicated willow lantern making workshops for the event.
The community lantern parade is forming part of Trenance Cottages Trees and Tales event during the fourth weekend of the Be Newquay Festival.
