FAMILY and friends gathered to celebrate the life of a Newquay man who was instrumental in the rise of the UK bodyboarding scene.
More than 100 people came together at Tolcarne Beach to attend a paddle out in memory of Sam Buckle on Sunday, November 17.
Many of those in attendance were bodyboarders and surfers who featured in the various films he created throughout his career as well as in his bodyboard magazine Lid.
Sam, who was also a keen chef, cameraman and wildlife photographer, had an impact on many people’s lives through his encouragement and positive attitude.
Artist Tony Plant created a sand artwork ahead of the paddle to pay tribute.
Friends and family rode various craft including vintage bodyboards for the paddle out, which is a traditional Hawaiian tribute to an esteemed waterman.
They gathered out on the water forming a circle to spend time with their thoughts and give Sam a good send off.
Sam’s friends and family gathered at the Colonial Bar afterwards to share their stories about his eventful life. Various bodyboarding films were also screened including Sam’s bodyboarding film titled I Try Stupid Things.
Sam’s brother Joe said: “Sam was deeply passionate and wholly dedicated to the UK bodyboarding scene and the celebration of outdoor living.
“The gathering at Tolcarne was remarkable, bringing the community together in a truly special way. The universe blessed us with perfect conditions - clear skies and fun waves.
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended. Special thanks go to many, including artist Tony Plant for his incredible sand drawing on Tolcarne Beach, and Jonny Roberts from El Rollo, who bravely shared a beautiful, personal poem about Sam’s life and passions within the circle.
“Thanks also to Ross Elliot, who gave a touching speech, appreciating Sam’s enthusiasm for life and adventure, and recognising the encouragement Sam gave others to pursue their dreams, plans, and projects.
“Our family is profoundly grateful to all who joined Sam’s paddle out. We also deeply appreciate everyone who helped make this event possible, which include Rob Barber, Olly Streeter, the photographers, the Tolcarne Beach team, The Colonial, and so many more.
“As Sam always said, #getoutsidemore.”
Rob Barber from Bodyboard Holidays added: “It’s never easy losing one of your own but it’s always a beautiful moment when a community comes together to celebrate the life of someone they love.
“Our dear friend Sam Buckle will be greatly missed, and his legacy will always be an important part of UK bodyboarding.”
