A SCHEME which would see 78 assisted living apartments built near the main road through St Austell is seeking outline planning permission but has already run into opposition.
Cornwall Council planners are being asked to approve the extra care project on a sloping site off the A390 Truro Road.
Atticus Planning, the agent for the proposal, says the scheme would see the vacant Pentreva Bungalow, which was previously used as housing for adults which complex learning difficulties, being demolished.
The site of the bungalow would be redeveloped along with adjacent open land where a large property known as Kerensa once stood.
The proposed new buildings would include two main blocks with a central connecting section. The blocks would be a maximum of four storeys high, with the majority being three storeys high.
Accessible roof gardens have been included in the design of the blocks and solar panels are proposed for some of the roofs.
The grounds around the buildings would feature a communal garden and ponds, as well as parking for 34 vehicles.
The scheme of one- and two-bedroom apartments would be an open market-led development.

A total of 58 flats would be made available on the open market. Six others would be offered for affordable ownership, with another 13 being classed as affordable social housing.
The development would include some communal facilities and those living there would have access to around-the-clock onsite care if needed.
Vehicular access to the site would be via the entrance that leads towards the now-empty Blantyre House. This rundown property is outside of the boundary of the proposed 1.16-hectare development site.
St Austell Town Council has voted to support the principle of having extra care housing on the site. However, the town council has decided to object to the height, design and access arrangements that have been put forward.
