ROYAL Navy bomb disposal units and police were called to Redruth School on Wednesday evening (May 15) after a bottle of crystallised acid was found on school premises by a caretaker.

Explosive ordnance disposal experts from Devonport were called upon to investigate the substance, move it to a safer location and detonate it in a controlled explosion.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were notified at around 5.10pm on Wednesday, May 15 following reports of a chemical believed to be potentially hazardous located on the Redruth School site.

“The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended and neutralised the substance nearby.”

Before the incident was reported, concerned locals living in the area took to social media asking what had happened after hearing a loud bang and witnessing a police presence outside the school.

Following the incident, Redruth school confirmed on Thursday, May 16 that the school was ‘fully operational’ again and that it was safe for students to return.
