PLANS to change the former Shoe Zone shop in the centre of St Austell into a nail salon have been approved.

Permission to change the use of the premises has been given by Cornwall Council.

Applicant Van Quang Nguyen has also gained approval to display a sign which says St Austell Nails & Spa at 22 Fore Street.

The plans gained the support of St Austell Town Council.

Mr Nguyen’s agent, Muhammad Safdar, of Radon86 in London, said in a planning statement: “The property is situated on Fore Street, St Austell, which offers a prime trading position to a variety of retail uses. The location is well represented with a mixture of national retailers together with a number of independent traders, estate agents and other local businesses.

“The site has been vacant for more than three years now. The shop was last occupied by Shoe Zone. Recently, sub-division of the existing larger unit to form two small independent shops and the replacement of the shopfront window and doors was approved by Cornwall Council.

“The opening of a nail shop in vacant premises will not only enhance the viability of the high street but also generate new employment opportunities.”
