Local historian, photograph collector and Voice reader Barrie Doney has no shortage of pictures and stories from Cornwall’s past, which he shares with Voice Newspaper readers every week.

This week’s photo sees us pay a visit to a grand old house which was destroyed in World War II prior to being rebuilt in an Elizabethan style in 1951 and taken over by local authorities in 1970.

Barrie says of this picture: “Mount Edgcumbe in its original Tudor glory. Tragically along with most of its contents it was destroyed by incendiary bombs in 1941. The present Elizabethan-style mansion was completed in 1951 It was purchased by Cornwall County Council and Plymouth City Council in 1970, complete with the park & gardens.
