A NEW primary school in Newquay has officially opened its doors.

Newquay Primary Academy, which is situated within the grounds of Newquay Tretherras in Trevenson Road, welcomed pupils and staff for the first day of school on Tuesday, February 25.

There were lots of smiles as pupils and staff arrived to start their new journey at the academy.

Pupils have previously been educated at The Sports Bar at Newquay Sports Centre after the venue was converted into classrooms ( )

The school, which is operated by the Cornwall Education Learning Trust, is designed to accommodate 420 pupils and has 14 classrooms, a dedicated design technology classroom as well as cookery classroom, a studio for dance activities, a library, main hall and kitchen.

A number of trial sessions were staged before the grand opening to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Pupils have settled into their new classrooms ( )

The academy was due to open in September 2021, but the partially built building had to be demolished after builders Caledonian Modular went into administration and numerous faults were discovered.

The Department for Education, which was responsible for the construction of Newquay Primary Academy, awarded the new build contract to Kier Construction who ensured it opened in time for the readjusted schedule.

Newquay Primary Academy has 14 classrooms, a dedicated design technology classroom as well as cookery classroom, a studio for dance activities, a library, main hall and kitchen ( )

A spokesperson for Newquay Primary Academy said: “After a few years of delays and calling a temporary building home, we’re beyond excited to finally open the doors to our beautiful, brand-new academy building.

The Department for Education funded the construction of Newquay Primary Academy to help meet the number of school places that are needed in the area due to the hundreds of new houses being built.
