Newquay Primary Academy, which has been constructed in the grounds of Newquay Tretherras, has been transferred to Cornwall Education Learning Trust by the builders Kier.

The school is designed to accommodate 420 pupils and will have 14 classrooms, dedicated design technology and cookery classrooms, a studio for dance activities, a library, main hall and a kitchen.

Newquay Primary Academy was due to open in September 2021, but the partially built building had to be demolished after construction company Caledonian Modular went into administration and numerous faults were found.

The Sports Bar at Newquay Sports Centre was converted into classrooms due to the delays.

The Trust stated it would make an announcement about its transitional plans “in the very near future.”

A spokesperson for the Trust said: “We are thrilled to announce that we now have the keys to our brand-new academy building.

“After spending some time in the temporary building, this is an exciting milestone for us.

“More information will be sent out regarding our transitional plans in the very near future.”

The spokesperson added: “Newquay Primary Academy is a brand new school.

“We opened our doors to our first cohort of new reception children in September 2021 and are now three years old.

“We are proudly part of the Cornwall Education Learning Trust and share a site with Newquay Tretherras secondary school. This means that, from reception through to Sixth Form, our learning community shares an approach to education which focuses on achieving excellence and ensuring that each child achieves their potential.

“Our philosophy is that stimulated children will thrive and develop a lifelong love of learning. It is for this reason that we base our teaching around providing a ‘proper’ childhood, where learning takes place both in and outside the classroom.

“We want children to feel part of Cornwall’s outstanding natural environment and proud heritage and culture.

“This is why education at Newquay Primary Academy is brimming with exciting activities and outings designed to enhance every child’s learning experience and sense of place.

“Newquay Primary Academy pupils are proud ambassadors for our school and our values, both historic and present.

“Our pupils are given a strong moral compass. They are taught to understand the importance of community cohesion and making a positive contribution to our unique community.”
