A Holywell Bay holiday park has been described as looking like a “war zone” in the wake of being hit by a ‘tornado’ on Thursday morning.

Trevornick Holiday Park had several of its caravans damaged by the twister shortly before 10am.

Caravans were either completely destroyed, toppled over, roofs blown off or windows were blown in as the tornado left a trail of destruction.

Police said a person received minor injuries when a caravan was blown over in Holywell Bay but Trevornick Holiday Park stated nobody was injured there.

Trevornick Holiday Park told the Voice: “All our team are safe and well.”

It added: “A mini-tornado swept through Newquay and Holywell Bay was in the path.

“Thankfully everyone at Trevornick is safe and no one was injured. There has been some damage but our incredible team have already started working on the clean-up operation so we will be back to our five-star standards soon.

“Rest assured, it's only a very isolated area of the park.”

Fortunately the park was shut to the public when the tornado swept through.

Resident Jennifer Smale said: “What a good job the site wasn’t open else there would probably have been some fatalities. It looks like a war zone. An absolute travesty.”

The path of the tornado caused damage to the old barracks at Penhale, overturned caravans at Trevornick Holiday Park, 60-foot Scots Pines felled at Rosecliston Farm, the road blocked by a tree pulled up at Tresean and roofs torn off on houses to the south and east of Quintrell Downs.
