A NEW colourful mural featuring giant bouncing beach balls has landed in Newquay.

Renowned artist Josephine Hicks aka Hixxy unveiled the design on the wall of the Unity building in Gover Lane on Wednesday (April 2). The ‘town to beach’ design aims to portray how the Newquay population explodes during the peak holiday season.

The artwork features elements such as RNLI lifeguards, hospitality workers, dogwalkers and a traffic warden ( )

The striking mural focuses on how the town copes with the ebb and flow of the visitor influx both positively and negatively.

The vibrant surrealist design shows the different impacts holidaymakers have on the town’s infrastructure including traffic, parking, hotels and holiday lets.

The artwork also features elements such as RNLI lifeguards, hospitality workers, dogwalkers and traffic wardens, all brought to life with a unique, larger-than-life, bright and bouncy style and aesthetic.

The bouncing beach balls symbolise to holidaymakers arriving in the town and making their way down the hill to the beach, but the unique visual style aims to leave audiences with space to form their own narratives.

Hixxy has collated in-depth archival information from a broad range of local sources to inspire and inform her location-sensitive piece.

Best known for her dynamic murals, often referred to as ‘Left Field Tutti-Fruity’ in appearance, Hixxy has an impressive portfolio, including collaborations with major brands like Clarks and Bombay Sapphire.

The beach ball mural forms part of a free street art walking trail celebrating Newquay’s unique heritage and identity, which aims to attract people to visit the town centre.

The first mural unveiled was an abstract beach scheme created by Cornwall-based artist Kleiner Shames at MIX NQY in East Street.

The second artwork features a fisherman tending to his nets at the junction of Fore Street and Sydney Road, which was created by Elle Koziupa.

Artist 45 RPM created the third mural, an illustrative and playful design on the back of The Walkabout at The Crescent. The mural features elements like surfing, palm trees, crabs, fishing nets, and camping.

Each artwork is connected via QR codes, which provides information about the artists and the design. The fourth mural of the beach balls will be connected in the same way.

The mural project has been delivered by Newquay BID and Jack Tierney from Slapdash Studio, MUQY.

The initial concept, which was developed by BID board member Dirk Parker and Slapdash Studio, was initially made possible with funding from Experience Newquay.

The new mural has been funded by Cornwall Council's Town Delivery Fund, which aims to help revitalise town centres.

Newquay BID manager Mark Warren said: “We are so excited to officially unveil the fourth mural in Newquay of the bouncing beach balls.

“We hope people agree it is a striking piece that speaks to the locals, whilst providing a fun and colourful lift to the street.

“Just like the others, it is thought provoking with depth and place-specific meaning.

“We have exciting plans for MUQY, with more sites set to launch in 2025, and we look forward to continuing to build on this legacy."
