MAJOR work is underway to restore Newquay Train Station’s second platform.
Network Rail is carrying out the work as part of the £56million Mid Cornwall Metro Project until Monday, October 28.
Trains into Newquay will increase from every two and a half hours to hourly from next May once the scheme, which involves creating a coast to coast through-service connecting Newquay with Par, St Austell, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth, is completed.
Other improvements will see enhancements to the train station, a new passing loop at Tregoss Moor; upgraded level crossings; new signalling at Goonbarrow; a new accessible lift bridge at Par Station and digitalisation of rail ticketing.
Network Rail has apologised in advance for any inconvenience caused through the parking limitation or the potential amount of noise caused while the second platform is restored.
Network Rail, in a letter to neighbours, said: “The work begins our project to restore a second platform at Newquay to bring more trains to the town.
“From May next year, trains will leave Newquay every hour, start earlier in the day and finish later. When Mid Cornwall Metro is complete in 2026, direct trains will run from Newquay to Falmouth.
“While we work, there will be fewer car parking spaces available at Newquay station. “We're sorry for any inconvenience.
“The nature of our work often means some noise is unavoidable. We're aware we will be working close to your home and will try to minimise this as much as possible, but we're sorry if we do disturb you.”
The Mid Cornwall Metro scheme aims to transform how people travel across Cornwall and create more frequent trains along the route between Newquay, St Austell, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth to help open up opportunities for education, training and employment.
There were fears that parts of the project had been scrapped, following the Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision to cancel the Restoring Your Railway Fund.
But Labour MP for Newquay and St Austell Noah Law has confirmed that this decision will have no impact to the scheme.
