FEARS have been raised the road signage along parts of the new section of the A30 is too confusing and dangerous.
There have been incidents of drivers going the wrong way along the stretch between Carland Cross to Chiverton due to the road signs in place.
They say the “appalling” road signage makes it particularly difficult for motorists when travelling to the Perranporth, Zelah and the St Newlyn East areas.
Drivers are now calling on National Highways to install “appropriate” signage to ensure motorists get to their destination safely.
Resident Shaun Skinner from St Newlyn East said: “The newly constructed and opened stretch of the A30 between Carland Cross to Chiverton is a massive improvement toward the A30 layout, however, there is a considerable problem regarding the new road signage particularly at the new Carland Cross layout which needs to be urgently addressed.
“As a former parish and district councillor that includes Carland Cross A30, I am very much concerned about the new road signage, which is appalling, and it makes it extremely difficult for motorist when travelling to the Perranporth, Zelah and St Newlyn East area.
“I have raised the issue with National Highways, Cornwall Highways, local Cornwall councillors and various local parish councils.
“When travelling westbound on the newly constructed A30 road layout from Bodmin and Summercourt, to travel to Perranporth, Zelah, St Newlyn East, motorists use the new westsbound slip road with a new road sign that reads Truro and Perranporth.
“However, when coming off the westbound slip road one arrives at a new junction where there are currently three road signs, the first reads Truro A39, Trispen turn left, second junction reads Redruth A30 turn left, and a third sign that reads Bodmin A30, there is no clear signage or indication for Perranporth.
“The underlying major problem is the fact there is not a new road sign that informs and directs motorist to Perranporth, Zelah and St Newlyn East, that involves travelling under the new A30 and reaching a further new roundabout that takes you to either Bodmin A30 or Perranporth whereby one will need to use the old A30 that after two miles journey will take you to the old Boxheater junction for Perranporth, Zelah, St.Newlyn East.
“In fact the current road signage at Boxheater junction that states Perranporth, Zelah, Goonhavern Cubert, St Newlyn East needs to be placed at Carland Cross. Motorists need to be aware in advance of both the direction and appropriate junction to use.
“A considerable number of local residents and visitors travelling to St Newlyn East have experienced difficulty in reaching the village from the newly constructed Carland Cross A30 given the fact there is no suitable and clear road signage.
“In fact motorists have been taking the new slip road westbound for Redruth A30 in the hope of finding their way to St Newlyn East, but sadly the newly constructed A30 takes one directly from Carland Cross to Chiverton with no turn-off what so ever for Perranporth, Zelah and St Newlyn East.
“It is absolutely vital that when travelling from Carland Cross to Perranporth, Zelah, St Newlyn East motorist require advance warning to use the old A30 that has been renamed as Perranporth B3288 that takes one to Boxheater junction.
“Local residents that wish to raise their concern regarding the new road signage at Carland Cross A30 may do so by contacting National Highways email at [email protected]
“As a local resident of St Newlyn East, I strongly believe that a new road sign should be placed at the appropriate junction at Carland Cross that reads Perranporth, Zelah and St Newlyn East.
“We had the same problem when the new Mitchell By-pass was constructed as there was no road signage for St Newlyn East, therefore, the same mistake has been made and St Newlyn East has been wiped off the map.
"I'm sure many folk will appreciate having the new section of A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross open, however, it’s all very well opening the newly constructed section of the A30 but it's absolutely of vital importance that suitable and appropriate road signs are put in place. Sadly this has not been done, I stood at Carland Cross viewing the road signs and its absolutely atrocious."
