The first cars made their way along the newly-opened A30 dual carriageway between Chiverton and Carland Cross this morning, following the final full weekend closure as part of National Highways’ £330-million road upgrade between the two junctions.
The road was closed from 8pm on Friday until 6am on Monday with a major diversion in place to allow finishing touches to the dualing scheme, which began four years ago.
The roadworks have seen Chiverton Cross moved further down the A30 and renamed “interchange”, while the Carland Cross junction with the A390 to Truro and the Chybucca junction with the B3284 Perranporth and Shortlanesend now boast two roundabouts each.
National Highways had previously said it wanted to open the dual carriageway ahead of the summer tourism rush.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: “We’d like to thank the people of Cornwall for their patience over the last few years while our teams have carried out this work.
“While everyone gets used to this major route, we’d like to remind motorists to drive safely and familiarise themselves with the layout of the new junctions.”
Further work will continue on access roads. To this end, the B3277 link road from Chiverton Junction to the services roundabout is fully closed until Friday, July 12.
Traffic heading from the A30 to St Agnes will be diverted along the A30 to Scorrier junction then through Blackwater, before re-joining the B3277 at the services roundabout (and vice versa).
Temporary traffic lights will also be installed on the A3075 near Chiverton Junction for a few days following the completion of the B3277 closure.
“We still need to carry out work on local roads, footpaths, bridleways, cycle routes and infrastructure in order to close down the site and fully complete the project,” the spokesperson continued. “We’ll be completing this work before the start of the school summer holidays.”
National Highways is the wholly government-owned company responsible for modernising, maintaining and operating England’s motorways and major A roads.
