Prime Cattle
Slim pickings on offer in the Prime Cattle section this week, with many more animals needed to meet the unprecedented buyer demand.
A light-weight Limousin heifer from Messrs F T & F M Johns of Cury, Helston topped the steers at 370p/kg, with a second from the same vendor at 360p/kg thereafter.
A pair of Blue steers from Mr R I Nicholls of St Clement, Truro both parted away for 359p/kg, one resulting in the top pounds-per-head of £2,466.
Heifers topped by a smart 540kg young non-FABBL Blue heifer from Jelbert Brothers of Newbridge, Penzance at 366p/kg.
Cull cows
Again less numbers around this week, but the trade would look strong for those on offer.
A run of good heavy-weight non-FABBL Limousin cull animals from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Camborne stole the show with prices racing away to 298p/kg (£2,274), 295p/kg (£2,510), 290p/kg (£2,836), 290p/kg (£2,326), 278p/kg (£2,166), and 275p/kg (£2,162) to name but a few.
A good Stabiliser cow from Messrs J N & M Miles of St Mawes sold for 276p/kg, with a Limousin cow from Maxco Farms of St Allen, Truro tied at the same money.
Another Stabiliser cow from Messrs Miles then went under the hammer at 274p/kg and a weighty 809kg non-FABBL Limousin cow from Mrs V Gay of Newquay parted away at 269p/kg (£2,176). More animals required whether FABBL or not.
Store cattle
Good numbers through the ring again this week and a stand on trade saw a pair of 2 year old British Blue steers from Treganhoe Farm Partnership of Penzance top the market at £2380, with a further single from the same farm at £2185.
Top quality 2 year old Blues from Mr D P Anderson of St Buryan, Penzance sold to £2130 for the choice three followed by another pair at £1960, whilst a 16 month old Shorthorn from Mr R Rowe of Penhallow, Truro parted away at £1820.
18 month old Aberdeen Angus from Messrs R & D P Rule ofMawla, Redruth realised £1805 and £1735, followed by further classy steers from Mr R Rowe at £1730 and £1605 for 1 year old Limousins.
A pair of 21 month old Angus from N H Semmens & Son Ltd of St Levan, Penzance marketed for £1600, a single 14 month old Hereford from Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son of Hewaswater, St Austell achieved £1585, whilst a single 20 month old Limousin from Mr M Chapman of Silverwell, Truro realised £1580.
Best of the younger steers previously mentioned, a single 15-month-old Limousin from Messrs M & J Rowe of Ashton, Helston sold for £1570, followed by further Limousins from Mr R Rowe at £1460 and four 14 month old Blues from Messrs J R Semmens & Son at £1350.
A smart trio of 13 month old South Devons from Mr B E Richards of Porkellis, Helston looked well sold at £1190.
Heifers selling to £1790 for a silky 2 year old Hereford from Mr M Allen of Roche, St Austell followed by 1½ year old Limousins from Messrs M & J Rowe at £1685 and £1570.
N H Semmens & Son Ltd sold a 21 month old Angus at £1550, whilst a 17 month old Hereford from Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son parted at £1470.
A 21 month old Blue from Messrs G B & J G Ellis of Penzance sold for £1465, followed by 1½ year old Angus at £1435 and £1420 on behalf of Mr F L Chapman and Messrs R & D P Rule respectively.
Younger heifers to £1350 for a pair of smart 12 month old Limousins from Mr R Rowe with a further lot thereafter at £1300, whilst a super bunch of four Shorthorns from Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son achieved £1145. Many 1 year old heifers selling in excess of £900 thereafter.
In Calf Cows to £1620 for a Devon from Maxco Farms of St Allen, Truro who went on to sell another at £1460, whilst cows with calves at foot sold to £1980 and £1820 for superb Devon outfits from Mr J R Julyan of Tresillian, Truro
Rearing calves
Another good entry selling on a tremendous trade.
Mr P S Best from Newquay had a nice run of young Aberdeen Angus x stirks ranging from two to four months old, seeing the best pair of steers sell for £655, and a single heifer making £560. Mr C Openshaw from Scorrier had a nice pen of slightly older Hereford x heifers looking well sold at £560 x four.
The young calves sold to a top of £520 for a British Blue x bull from Messrs R N & D Jenkin from Manaccan who sold further British Blue x bulls £515 and £400 and a Aberdeen Angus x bull at £430, and going on to top the heifer section with a British Blue x heifer making £475 with other British Blue x heifers to £325.
Another British Blue x bull calf sold to £445 for Messrs M J & R M Tremayne from Constantine and Hereford x bulls topped at £430 for Messrs R G Olver & Son from St Stephen with another at £405 and going on to sell their Hereford x heifers for £340 and £320.
Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East saw the best of their British Blue x bulls sell for £400. Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £395 for Messrs B & J Bailey from Veryan who sold another at £380.
Some very young Charolais x calves saw bulls to £385 for Messrs H L, T & C Lyne from St Clement, best of the Aberdeen Angus x heifer calves selling to £370 for Messrs C J & J E Colwell from Creed, and Simmental x heifers to £320 for Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston with plenty of buyers in attendance, seeing a strong trade throughout the sale.
Prime Hoggs
A storming trade, with lower numbers reported Nationally. Prices have jumped on the week, with an overall average of 330p/kg and £152/head.
Topping at £169.50 for a (381p) single Beltex 44.5kg from Miss A Payne of Cubert, Newquay sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd.
This was closely followed by well finished 46.5kg hoggs from Messrs S B & M Tonkin of Par, St Austell, sold to J V Richards Ltd.
Prime lambs
A handful of pens of new season lambs forward meant keen bidding and a strong trade.
Selling to a top price of £169.00 for a heavyweight lamb from Messrs M & S Baxter of Wendron, Helston, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Setting the premium to 367p/kg for a pen of 45kg from the same vendor and also purchased by J V Richards Ltd.
Cull ewes
A superb Festival trade from start to finish for a wide variety of ewes, peaking at £230.00 for a stand-out Texel from Messrs E A & A R Thomas of Sevenmilestone, Truro.
Further Texels at £195.00 for a pen from Messrs M & S Baxter of Wendron, Helston; more from Messrs Thomas at £191.00 and then £186.00 for Messrs R J Vincent & Son of Blackwater, Truro.
Blue Texel x to £186.00 again from Messrs Baxter. Charollais x to £193.00 from Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan, Newquay. Suffolk x to £170.00 from Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth.
Dorsets to £159.00 from Sturmans Livestock of Wadebridge; and £155.50 from Messrs A J & A C Kingdon. Overall ewe average £144.00. Rams to £129.00 for a 2 year old Lleyn from Messrs Hoskins of Silverwell, Truro.
2T (sheep) to £150.00 for a Texel x from Messrs Baxter and then £148.00 for a Dorset from Mr J M Grose of Helston. Many more could have been sold on the flying Festival trade which is hitting record highs yet again in Truro.
LAA statistics put the E & W National average this week at around £138.00 vs the peak in 2024 of £139.00 and in 2023 of £125.00.
Store sheep
Yet another good entry with trade very much in touch with the finished market, selling to £139 for a framey close to finish Continental pen from Messrs E R and A R Thomas of Sevenmilestone.
Messrs M & S Baxter of Wendron, Helston sold their choice six at £135 with another pen from the same vendor at £130, whilst Mr J M Grose of Manaccan, Helston sold a good quality pair at £132.
A pen from Messrs G M & J A Olver of Bodmin sold to £130.50, whilst a trio from Mr N Holman of Chiverton, Truro realised £129.50.
The majority of pens thereafter exceeding the £100 mark and even longer term stores trading at around £90.
