Community litter-picking kicked off this morning when volunteers gathered at The Alverton to tackle the area around Tregolls Road and Furniss Island.

Truro BID and Newham BID are joint hosts of the eighth City Clean Up today and tomorrow, encouraging as many businesses as possible to volunteer an hour to help tidy up different parts of the city.

Truro BID manager Alun Jones said previous events had seen more than 100 bags of rubbish collected from roadsides, residential and wooded areas. “It’s an event that brings different communities and businesses together,” he said. “They might never have met each other before, but they share a desire to do something positive for their neighbourhood.

“If everyone had the idea of picking something up when they see it, the city would be a lot cleaner.”

Further sessions today include cable-tie cutting and sign washing from 12.30pm (meet outside Truro Library); Kenwyn Litter Pick from 2pm (contact [email protected]); and Newham BID litter pick (meet at St Petroc’s, Peat House for a safety briefing at 3pm).

Tomorrow, the Friends of Daubuz Moor will meet at 10.20am at the gate entrance at the Treseder Gardens/Moresk Road end for a litter pick, while the Friends of Coosebean will scour the Malabar football pitch off Coosebean greenway cycle track. If you wish to take part, contact [email protected]

Trelander & St Clements Community Association will host a litter pick from 10am (meet at Trelander Hall – contact Hannah Harris [email protected]), and Hendra Community Litter Pick will gather at Hendra Hall from 2pm (contact [email protected]).
