Prime Cattle
The Truro Trade truly setting the pace for Prime. Cattle in the South West and finding the first elusive £4/kg bullock.
A stunner of a young 16 month old 582kg Parthenaise x heifer from Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro, who truly know how to turn out quality cattle, soared away to the record top of £4/kg (£2,328), with their second 542kg Parthenaise x heifer hot on the heels at 396p/kg (£2,146).
A pair of cracking heifers from Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle tied at 360p/kg being a 618kg Angus (£2,225) and a 648kg South Devon (£2,333).
Another pair of bullocks tied at 356p/kg next comprising a 553kg Angus heifer from Laity Farms and a 692kg British Blue steer from Messrs T W & W T James of Sancreed at the same money, which also claimed the top pounds-per-head at £2,464.
Next up was another 644kg Blue steer from Messrs James at 351p/kg (£2,260) and a 686kg Angus steer from Mr D L Grigg of Truro sold for 348p/kg (£2,387).
As usual many other quality bullocks forward looking very well sold and are a credit to the vendors. Of the 18 animals forward, 11 all sold for over £2,000, 14 over 330p/kg and 7 over 350p/kg!
Cull Cows
Cull prices as buoyant as ever, with no easing of the trade in sight.
Top honours for a non FABBL 637kg Limousin cow from Mrs B M Chapman of St Columb Major at 269p/kg, with a FABBL Limousin cow from Messrs A R, B & A Hosking of St Martin, Helston at 264p/kg and a South Devon cow from Laity Farms of Gwinear, Hayle at 259p/kg thereafter.
An Angus cow again from Messrs Hosking was only one bid behind at 258p/kg and another South Devon cow from Laity Farms sold at 246p/kg, both realising over £2,100.
A pair of cows tied next at 244p/kg being a Charolais from Messrs J & R J Nankervis of Zennor and a Hereford from Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Gweek, Helston.
Dairy types to 236p/kg for a FABBL Friesian from Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen, St Austell, followed by a FABBL Ayrshire cow from Mr J D Hosken of Laity Moor, Truro at 233p/kg and the best pair of FABBL Friesians from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro at 227p/kg and 210p/kg respectively.
Store Cattle
A grand entry and yet another sublime trade throughout.
The dearest steers parting away at £2360 for a first-class trio of 22-month-old South Devons from Mr S E Chapman of Blackwater, Truro who also marketed a 20-month-old Angus at £1960.
Forward steers in from Messrs W W James & Sons of Sancreed, Penzance achieved £2205 for the choice Angus and Limousin, with a further pair of Angus at £2190, all being 2-years-old.
A superb bunch of six 21-month-old Herefords from Mr E J Harris of Wendron, Helston parted at £2140, followed by a single 22-month-old Blue from Messrs J H & K L Worden of Breage, Helston at £2,000.
Messrs Worden also marketed a trio of 22-month-old Angus at £1970, whilst a single 19-month-old Blue from Messrs C J and S A Davey of Redruth looked well sold at £1980.
No shortage of 2-year-old steers selling between £1500 and £1700 thereafter.
Younger steers topping at £1810 for a show quality bunch of four 11-monthold Pure bred Limousins from Messrs J M Richards & Son of Wheel Alfred Road, Hayle who sold a further trio of £1685, whilst a premium consignment of 15-month-old steers from Messrs J R Semmens & Sons of St Levan, Penzance sold to £1365 for Herefords and £1360 for Blues.
Heifers to £1895 for a single 22-month-old South Devon from Mr S E Chapman, followed by 22-month-old Angus from Messrs J F & K L Worden at £1845, £1780 and £1765, whilst Herefords of the same age from Mr E J Harris sold to £1700 for the choice pair followed by two trios at £1680 and £1655. 2-year-old Angus from Messrs A R, B & A Hosking of St Martin, Helston sold away at £1635, followed by a 2- year-old Angus from Messrs W W James & Sons at £1630.
A 17-month-old Shorthorn from Mr J B W Bennetts of Ruan Minor, Helston traded at £1500, whilst younger heifers topped at £1190 for a bunch of four Blues from Messrs J R Semmens & Son, with a further bunch at the same age at £1170 and a further five Herefords at £1030.
A single 12-month-old Friesian x from Gwealavellan Partners of Hayle sold at £1145, whilst young Blues from Messrs C J & S A Davey topped at £1130 and young Herefords from Mr W H A Hicks of Maenporth, Falmouth sold away at £1090.
In-calf Limousin cows over from the Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly achieved £1490 whilst Devon cows and calves from Mr G P Hoddinott of Redmoor, Bodmin realised £1630 for the choice outfit, with a further two at £1460.
Rearing Calves
Another good entry of calves & young stirks met another strong trade.
Best of the 4 month old stirks sold to £670 for a pen of six Limousin x heifers from Messrs M & J Rowe from Ashton who went on to sell a pair of Limousin x bulls for £650, and also saw a pair of British Blue x steers make £650 each with Mr W H A Hicks from Maenporth, Falmouth selling his pair of Hereford x steers for £630.
The young calves also saw a fast trade with the best of the British Blue x bulls selling for £465 on behalf of Messrs R N & D Jenkin from Manaccan, Helston who also went on to sell British Blue x heifers for £395 and £330.
A nice run of young calves from Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian, Truro sold to £460 for a British Blue x bull with another making £435, and the best of their British Blue x heifers at £400 and another at £375.
Limousin x bulls sold to £455 for Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah, Truro with further Limousin x bulls to £430 for Mr W H F Harvey from Lanivet, who also went on to sell Limousin x heifers for £370. Hereford x bulls to £430 for Mr W H A Hicks who also sold another two for £420 each.
Messrs H L T & C Lyne from St Clement sold a Hereford x bull for £425 with the best of their Hereford x heifers making £405 and another at £340, and Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £425 for Mr A G Tilly from Crowlas.
Plenty of other vendors selling bulls between £370 to £400. Topping the heifer section was a Charolais x heifer flying away to £435 for Messrs J & S Trembath from Gurnards Head.
Prime Hoggs
A flying trade across the board and more needed to meet buyer demand.
An overall average of £152/head, and selling to a top price of £169.00 for a pair of Suffolk hoggs from Mr K R Williams of Camborne, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
Setting the premium at 352p/kg for a smart pair of 45kg hoggs from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay also sold to J V Richards Ltd.
Cull Ewes
A quality run of ewes were met with a phenomenal trade in Truro with a record overall average of £153.00/head.
Prices soared to £216.00 for the best of a run of Texels from Messrs M J & L H J Anselmi of Helston with more at £196.00 and £179.00. A quality trio of Texels from Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay reached £193.00.
Suffolks to £180 from Mr K R Williams of Camborne, and a Suffolk cross from Messrs Jones at £175.00. Further Texel types to from Messrs J Lutey & Sons of Grampound Road, Truro to £175.00.
Dorsets to £150 twice for Messrs P Kingdon & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay and Mr J T Rowe of Camborne. Mules from Messrs Lutey at £147.50, Clun Forest to £135.50 for a 2T and £129.50 for a pen of ewes from Messrs Anselmi.
Store Sheep
A very light entry compared to last week, though trade much the same across the board.
Best store hoggs to £124.50 on behalf of Mr R G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay, who sold a further single at £120.00, followed by a smart even pen from Messrs K S & L Dodd of Old Kea, Truro at £110.50.
Good quality stores from Messrs M & S Blake of St Stephens and Miss L Baker of Truro, both realised £110.00. A sublime trade for couples, with Mr G Nickells of Fourlanes, Redruth, marketing both singles and doubles to £300 per outfit.
