Prime Cattle
A storming entry of Prime Cattle this week, with some excellent quality animals all selling on a sensational trade and even more records smashed yet again.
A topping run of bullocks from J B Old Farms of Treyarnon Bay, Padstow topped the market at a record 438p/kg for their 744kg Limousin steer, also setting the new pounds-per-head record at £3,259.
A quality 574kg Limousin steer from Messrs F T & F M Johns of Cury, Helston sold away at 434p/kg (£2,491), with their second 544kg Limo steer at 433p/kg (£2,356) thereafter.
Top of another run of cracking Limousins from Messrs J & J Sawle & Son of St Agnes, Truro to 430p/kg (£2,765) for a 643kg Limousin steer and other prices at 429p/kg (£2,540), 424p/kg (£2,650), 423p/kg (£2,415), 422p/kg (£2,355), 420p/kg (£2,549) and 418p/kg (£2,178).
Another good heavyweight Limousin steer from J B Old Farms at 405p/kg (£2,770) and a 718kg Blue steer from Messrs T W & W T James of Sancreed, Penzance followed at 400p/kg (£2,872), which was tied with another 781kg Simmental steer from J B Old Farms at the same pence-per-kilo and a resultant £3,124.
Heifers topped at 408p/kg (£2,721) for a 667kg Limousin from Messrs Sawle and their second 507kg Limo heifer at 406p/kg.
Cull Cows
A quality entry of Cull Cows this week, with some excellent consignments from many vendors. Top pence-per-kilo at 372p/kg (£2,541) for a 683kg Limousin cow from Mr P I Hodge of Manaccan, Helston.
Next was a run of the usual quality Limousin and Charolais cows from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay, with prices at 338p/kg, 337p/kg twice, 332p/kg, 331p/kg, 321p/kg, 301p/kg and 299p/kg, averaging 324.5p/kg and £2,135.
A good 626kg Limousin cow from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay realised 327p/kg (£2,047) and a 709kg Charolais cow from the same vendor at 308p/kg (£2,184).
The best Simmental cow from Messrs P M & A Jewell of Alverton, Penzance parted away for 298p/kg, a Simmental cow from Mr D G Kitchen of Helston sold at 286p/kg (£2,033) and a Limousin cow from Messrs R & J Bailey of Frogpool at 283p/kg (£2,032).
Very limited dairy types to a top of 271p/kg for a Guernsey cow from Messrs G B & J G Ellis of Penzance and a Friesian cow from Messrs B L Hearn & Partners of Whitecross went under the hammer for 268p/kg (£1,919).
Store Cattle
A great entry and a super trade again this week.
Top steer price of £2,580 for a top class 19 month old Blue from Messrs D W & R P Dingle of Ruan High Lanes, Truro, who sold an Angus of a similar age and quality to £2,560 and Simmentals to £2540.
A 2 year old South Devon from Mr S C Rowe of St Austell, realised £2,500, followed by a smashing single Blue of the same age from Mr D P Anderson of St Buryan, Penzance, at £2,460.
A grand bunch of four 23 month old South Devons from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro, parted away at £2,305, with a pair of 2 year old Angus from Messrs A A & D P Eddy of Hayle, coming in £2,200.
Younger steers selling to £2,010 for a superb single South Devon from Broompark Partnership making the trip down to Truro from Week St Mary, Holsworthy, followed by Messrs W B & S P Penrose of Camborne at £1,760 for his four South Devons.
A trio of 1 year old Limousins from Mr W L Hollow of St Ives sold for £1,710 a piece, whilst a trio of 9 month old Limousins from Mr P Tregear of Newbridge, Penzance traded at £1,615.
Heifers topping at £2,490 for a trio of first class 23 month old South Devons from Mr J C Ball of St Merryn, who sold a further bunch at £2,080, whilst a pair of 2 year old Limousins from Messrs W S Gay & Son realised £2,405.
35 month old South Devon heifers to £1,930 on behalf of Mrs S J Tune of St Columb, then a 28 month old Limousin to £1,850 for Messrs A A & D P Eddy.
Younger heifers trading to £1,680 for a quality trio of South Devons from James Eustice Farms of Wadebridge, followed by South Devons from Mrs S J Tune at £1,460 and £1,445.
A small sale of breeding stock topped at £1,980 thrice for in calf Limousin heifers from the Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly, whilst a standout 18 month old Pedigree South Devon bull as part of the dedicated Sale went under the hammer at £5,200 on behalf of Messrs P S & A P Rowe of Menheniot, Liskeard.
Rearing Calves
With a ring packed full of potential buyers nowhere near enough calves to satisfy buyers, with all calves selling on an exceptional trade.
Best of the very young Aberdeen Angus x bull calves selling to £520 on behalf of Messrs B & J Bailey from Veryan, Truro and further young Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £500 and £410 for Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East, Newquay who also went on to sell a run of British Blue x heifers for £425, £380, £355 and £345.
Further British Blue x bulls to £395 and £350 for Mr J Wilkinson from Constantine who also sold his British Blue x heifers at £345 and £300.
Danish Red bulls looked well sold at £195, £155 and £150 for Mr J D Hosken from Laity Moor. Aberdeen Angus x heifers to £295 for Messrs M J Cox & H Floyd from Tregony, Truro and some young Hereford x heifers sold to £230 for Messrs F & L Hutchings from Four Lanes, Redruth.
Just a small entry of Devon x stirks on behalf of Mr D R Hair from London Apprentice seeing a steer race away to £630 and his pair of Devon x heifers making £350 each.
Prime Hoggs
Prices back on the week with an overall average of £141/head. Large numbers of hoggs are being marketed Nationally which is seeing a resultant fall in prices.
Some enormous weights coming through, with a 76kg butchers hogg from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay topping out at £181.00, sold to Mr L Cleave of Highampton, Devon.
The averages peaked at 347p/kg for a trio of 40.3kg Beltex hoggs, again from Mr R A Coad.
Prime Lambs
A good entry forward, met with a more difficult trade in-line with reports Nationally on the day, the new season trade has taken a knock this week, as large numbers finished hoggs are being marketed.
Topping the lambs at £171.50 were a superb pair of 44kg Charollais lambs from Mr R Rowe of Penhallow, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow. Leading the averages to 397p were sappy 37.5kg lambs from Mr T Ham of Baldhu, also sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd.
Cull Ewes
Cull ewes to £235.50 this week for the best of a pen of Texels from Mr R A Road of Cubert, Newquay.
This was followed by a Texel from Messrs N A & J R Phillips of Truro at £233.00, and another at £200.00. Charollais to £226.00 for a cracking ewe from Mr T Watters of Carleen, Helston. Zwartbles to £209.00 for a medium pen from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of St Columb.
Dorsets to £171.00 for Mr D J Lobb of St Austell. On the whole there were few continentals forward this week with a high portion of Lleyn and Aberfield types. A good run of Aberfield types forward from Mr J J D Hext of St Just-in- Roseland selling to £156.50.
Welsh ewes to £133.00 from Mr R A Coad. Rams to £148.00 for a crossbred from Messrs C J &J A Benny of Helston; and £142.00 for a Lleyn ram from Mr E Whiteman of St Ewe, St Austell.
2T (sheep) to £176.00 and £168.00 for Charollais and Texels from Messrs W H Morgan & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay.
Store Sheep
A short run of couples from three vendors this week, and a flying trade for all on offer.
Doubles to £375.00 for full mouth Zwartbles with cracking lambs on them from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of St Columb and full mouth singles to £255.00 from the same vendor.
Lleyns from Mr D Searle of Wendron, Helston to £250.00 for a full mouth single ewe with a 6 week old ewe lamb, and £310.00 for 4T doubles with 5 week old lambs.
A super run of mixed full mouth ewes with young Charollais sired lambs from Messrs A D & W D Brown of Lostwithiel, selling to £230.00 for single and £300.00 doubles.
All couples were a credit to the vendors, with the entitle run of single averaging £118.50/life and doubles to £103/life.
Store hoggs to £141.00 for a big single from Mr T Watters of Helston. Small/medium stores range from £97.00 to £104.50.
