Prime Cattle
An average entry of Prime Cattle this week, with no real topping bullocks forward, although a fast trade for those on offer.
Top price went to a good 572kg Limousin heifer from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro at 388p/kg (£2,219), closely followed by a 610kg Charolais heifer from Messrs W F Palmer & Son of Ruan High Lanes at 380p/kg (£2,318).
A 642kg Limousin from Messrs Wills topped the steers at 379p/kg (£2,433) and a 639kg Limousin heifer from Mr D L Grigg of Truro realised 370p/kg (£2,364). Top pounds-per-head was achieved by an OTM Non FABBL Limousin heifer from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Camborne, weighing in at 774kg, selling for 334p/kg and a resultant £2,585.
Cull Cows
A mixed entry again this week, with trade holding firm.
Top of 276p/kg for an Angus cow from Messrs R J Richards & Sons of Piece, Redruth, with a Shorthorn cow from Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance one bid behind at 275p/kg.
A Non FABBL Charolais cow from Mr J M Curnow of Troon, Camborne went under the hammer at 266p/kg and a Hereford cow from Mr S W Beale of Porthtowan, Truro sold at 263p/kg, with a Non FABBL Simmental cow from Messrs R G & J M Prowse of St Allen, Truro at 260p/kg.
A pair of Friesian cows from Messrs W Skewes of Penzance topped the dairy types at 264p/kg and 263p/kg respectively. Further dairy types to 256p/kg for a Friesian from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro and a pair of further Friesians tied thereafter at 249p/kg; one entered from Messrs Skewes and the other from Messrs L Wherry & Son.
Store Cattle
Another grand entry of 230 stores through the ring and another fast trade selling to a top call for steers of £2875 for a single 2-year-old Charolais on behalf of Messrs W F Palmer & Son of Ruan High Lanes, Truro, followed by a trio of 2-year-old Angus at £2500 on behalf of Mr R B P Nicholls of St Buryan, Penzance.
Super 2-year-old steers followed from Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston, selling to £2350 for the choice trio of Limousins followed by a further pair of Limousins at £2195 and a pair of Charolais at £2110, with a final Limousin at £2100.
Messrs C H Bird & Son of Hayle sold a fine 2-year-old Blue at £2010, with a further Angus from the same vendor at £1940 and 1½ -year-old Angus to £1720. A pair of 17-month-old Herefords from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par, St Austell realised £1905 and 20-month-old Herefords from Mr N W Hooper of St Austell at £1790.
2-year-old South Devons from Messrs S & C Taffinder of Portscatho, Truro realised £1785. Best of the youngest steers selling to £1790 for a trio of top-class Angus, a 14-month-old from Mr M W Cowling of Rumford, Wadebridge followed by Angus of a similar age from Messrs R J Richards & Sons of Redruth with five at £1780, six at £1640 and also four Stabilisers at £1665.
A trio of smart Charolais from Mr K R Williams of Camborne realised £1660, followed by a pair of 1-year-old Devons from Messrs J E Nicholls & Son of Ludgvan, Penzance at £1625 and further Angus from Mr Cowling thereafter at £1600.
A strong trade for heifers, selling to £2010 for a 2-year-old pair of South Devons from Mrs S J Tune of Tregonetha, St Columb, followed by Limousins from Messrs C H Bird & Son of Hayle at £1760 and Angus from the same vendor at £1750.
A 1½ -year-old Blue from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell realised £1,700 whilst a pair of Angus from the same vendor parted away at £1645 and followed by a trio of Devons, being 2-year-old from Mr J McFadden of St Just, Penzance at £1640.
Younger heifers selling to £1890 for an outstanding 1-year-old Blue from Messrs A Roberts & Sons, followed by a single Shorthorn from Messrs D G Lambrick & Son of St Keverne, Helston at £1355 and a trio of 1-year-old Limousins from Messrs M & J Rowe of Ashton, Helston at £1305.
Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son of Hewaswater, St Austell sold a 1-year-old Shorthorn at £1280, followed by a further Shorthorn from Messrs Lambrick at £1200. Mr M D Wearne of Wendron sold a pair of 1-year-old Limousins at £1160, whilst the choice trio from a good run from Mr P S Best of Newquay realised £1150.
In-calf cows selling to £2,100 on behalf of the Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly, with further cows from the same vendor at £1960 and £1770.
Rearing Calves
The volume is short and the demand is great, seeing a wonderful trade from start to finish.
The best young Aberdeen Angus x bull raced away to £560 for Mr W R Davey from Probus, closely followed by Hereford x bulls selling for £555, £540 and £495 on behalf of Messrs C Thomas & Son from Penryn who also went on to sell a British Blue x heifer for £440.
The best of the British Blue x bulls to £520 for Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East, Newquay who also sold another British Blue x bull for £465, and going on to sell British Blue x heifers for £395 & £390.
A Stabiliser x bull made £515 for Messrs R J Richards & Son from Redruth, and further Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £470 for Messrs C J & J E Colwell from Creed. A very young Simmental x bull sold well to make £410 for Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston who also went on to sell a Simmental x heifer for £375.
The best of the Friesian bulls to £250 for Messrs J & S Trembath from Gurnards Head who went on to take the honours in the heifer section seeing their Charolais x heifer flying away to £545. British Blue x heifers to £445 for Messrs K & M Ferris from Gunwalloe.
Prime Hoggs
Trade has eased Nationally, but prices were stronger than expected and still holding well.
Topping at £170.00 for a butcher single hogg from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay, sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton. Topping the averages at 352p/kg for 44kg Beltex crosses, also from Mr R A Coad, sold to Mr L Cleave of Highampton.
Prime Lambs
A good entry forward and some excellent quality on offer. A flying trade, with Truro’s averages standing ahead of the SW trade this week, with an SQQ average of 416.3p/kg.
Setting the premium to 434p/kg for the best pick of two pens of Dorset Lambs forward from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par, St Austell, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
Hitting the top spot at £187.00 for a trio of shapely 45kg Charollais lambs from Miss L Monk of Truro, also purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd.
Cull Ewes
The cull ewe trade hitting record highs yet again in Truro with the entire entry averaging £165.14. Many more could have been sold on the searing trade and farmers are strongly encouraged to market ewes without delay.
Setting the benchmark at £233.00 was a cracking Charollais ewe from Mr R Rowe of Penhallow. Texel x to £217.00 for the best pen of a real standout run from Messrs P T R & P E Jones & Son of Crantock, Newquay with others at £201, £199 and £191 and their entire run averaging just over £200.
Suffolks to £210.00 for a quality trio from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Troon, Camborne. Further Texels to £209.00 from Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey of St Keverne and then £195 and £194 for the best of a super run from Mr W L Hollow of St Ives.
Dorset x to £195.00 for a huge ewe also from Mr R Rowe. Rams to £150.00 for a Texel x. Also of note was a sheep (2T) to £144.00 for a Texel x from Mr M Horrocks of Cubert, Newquay.
Store Sheep
Lighter in number this week, though a good trade selling to £149 for close to finish heavies from Mr M Horrocks of Cubert, Newquay, followed by a nice pair of Suffolks at £120 on behalf of Mr K R Williams of Camborne.
Trade lifting for couples, with single pedigree Lleyn outfits to £242 and £235 for Messrs D & S Searle of Wendron, Helston.
