Prime Cattle

A sublime entry of Prime this week in Truro, with another new top record set and trade kicking up yet another gear.

A stunning run of well-finished FABBL Limousins from Messrs J & J Sawle & Son of St Agnes, Truro stole the show with a top record of 423p/kg (£2,521) for a super 596kg steer, with further topping prices at 418p/kg, 415p/kg, 412p/kg, 408p/kg, 406p/kg and 399p/kg for steers.

Heifers topped by Messrs Sawle again with their 688kg Limo at 413p/kg and others at 411p/kg and 409p/kg to round off their day.

A good 664kg Limousin steer from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro parted away for 398p/kg, and a pair of heavyweight steers next; one at 394p/kg (£2,860) for a 726kg Blue from Messrs L T Harvey & Sons of Newbridge and a 745kg Charolais from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge at 386p/kg (£2,876).

More heifers to 409p/kg for a 605kg NON FABBL Limousin from Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston and top heifer from a run on behalf of Mr D L Grigg of Wheal Frances, Truro at 391p/kg (£2,561) for a 655kg Blue.

Top pounds-per-head to £2,904 for Messrs Sawle’s 693kg Limousin steer at 419p/kg.

Of the 26 strong entry, 10 over £4/kilo, 6 over £4.10/kilo, 16 over £2,500 and 8 over £2,700.

Cull Cows

A much improved entry in terms of numbers and quality this week in the cull section with a flying trade to match.

Top pence-per-kilo to 340p/kg (£2,040) for the best 600kg Limousin cow from a run of NON FABBL animals from Messrs D J, H E & J E Lugg of Cury, Helston, with other prices from the same vendor at 338p/kg, 315p/kg twice, 311p/kg, 301p/kg and 298p/kg.

A cracking 890kg NON FABBL Charolais cow from Mr R Gregory of Kerley, Truro looked very well sold at 308p/kg and claimed the top pounds-per-head of £2,741.

A good 772kg NON FABBL Blonde cow from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas realised 304p/kg (£2,347), a NON FABBL Hereford cow from Mr L Pedley of Lostwithiel parted away for 303p/kg and a NON FABBL Simmental cow from Messrs P M & A Jewell of Alverton, Penzance sold away at 294p/kg.

Dairy types topped by a Friesian cow from Gwealavellan Partners of Gwithian at 331p/kg and a second from the same stable at 310p/kg thereafter.

Store Cattle

Good numbers through the ring and trade remaining strong across the board with older steers topping at £2,590 on behalf of Mr W G Piper of Penzance for four 2-year-old Limousins, followed by 2-year-old South Devons from Mrs S J Tune of St Columb at £2300 and £2250.

A 17-month-old Devon steer from Mr B J Maycock of Bodmin realised £2210, whilst a trio of 2-year-old Charolais from Mr P J Kemp of Helston parted away at £1955 and closely followed by further South Devons from Mrs Tune at £1860 and £1830.

Further Charolais from Mr Kemp to £1760 and £1670, whilst Mr M D Wearne of Wendron sold a single 2-year-old Limousin to £1570, with a pair of Shorthorn steers from Mr J T Rowe of Camborne trading at the same money.

Younger steers selling to £1795 for a single 1-yearold Limousin from Mr T D Michell of Truro, with 16-month-old Limousins to £1680 on behalf of Messrs P V & C S Forway of Threemilestone, Truro and five Blues from Mr T D Michell at £1525.

A single 13-month-old Blue from Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par, St Austell realised £1350, four 11-month-old Limousins from F G Gluyas & Partners of Camborne achieved £1345, whilst a pair of 10-month-old Limousins from Mr P I Hodge of Manaccan, Helston sold to £1340.

Heifers also selling on a good trade and topping at £2460 on behalf of Mr W G Piper for a pair of 2-year-old Limousins with a further four also achieving the same money, then a trio at £2220 and four at £2140 thereafter.

All in, Mr Piper marketed seventeen 2-year-old Limousins with an average of £2373.

Mr C Williams of Penzance sold a fine 28-month-old Blue at £2080 followed by a cracking bunch of seven 17-month-old Angus from James Eustice Farms Ltd of St Ervan, Wadebridge realising £1990.

2-year-old Limousins to £1970 and £1830 on behalf of Mr T D Michell, whilst Mr F Stephens of Lostwithiel sold a trio of 2-year-old Limousins at £1840, and followed by Mr B J Maycock with a pair of Devons at £1750.

1½ -year-old heifers also looking well sold with a Blue from Messrs J P & T C Chapman of Redruth at £1700, with Angus from the same vendor at £1695, and Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell at £1640 for his single Blue.

Younger heifers to £1565 on behalf of Mr R P Forway for a trio of Limousins followed by a single Blue from Mr T D Michell at £1525 and a trio of Shorthorns from Mr R J Trezise of Penzance at £1490.

Cows and calves topping at £2040 for a Limousin outfit from Mr M J P Williams of Manaccan, Helston.

Rearing Calves

A short entry of calves to report with some quality forward, although many more are needed to satisfy the strong and regular buyer demand.

Two smart consignments of weaned calves saw a good trade, with a 7 month old Blue steer to £740 for Messrs N J Cox & H Floyd of Tregony, Truro and their pair of further Blue steers at £705 thereafter.

Messrs H L, T & C Lyne of St Clement, Truro sold their 4 month old Hereford steer at £700 and their run of weaned heifers to £680 for Charolais and £675 for Herefords.

A run of sweet younger calves from Messrs Lyne sold well with their pair of Hereford heifers at £520 and £505, followed by a younger Charolais heifer from Messrs B & J Bailey of Veryan at £460.

Bull calves saw a good trade for the best types, with an older Limousin from Messrs L C & P Pengilly & Son of St Keverne, Helston at £470, a 4 week old Blue bull calf from Mr J Wilkinson of Constantine, Falmouth at £450 and another Limousin from Messrs Pengilly parted away at £435.

Prime Hoggs

A flying trade across the board with exceptional top prices for a large number of very heavy hoggs.

Topping at a whopping £197.00 for a single enormous 79.5kg hogg from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Leading the averages at 338p/kg were a smart pen of 46.8kg hoggs from Mr S G Collins of St Newlyn East, purchased by Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Prime Lambs

A good entry forward for the Special Easter Sale of New Season Lambs and improved averages again on the week.

Some exceptional top prices, peaking at £196.00 for 45kg Dorset x Charollais lambs from Messrs G C & V D Mitchell of Liskeard, sold to Jaspers of South Petherwin.

Setting the premium to 441p/kg for 41.5kg Charollais lambs from Miss L Monk of Truro purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

Without exaggeration the cull ewe trade is off the clock with records broken yet again at Truro this week.

Despite very few continentals coming forward, the average increased again on Wednesday to £169.00; and with only 4 ewes below £135.00.

Topping at £266.00 was the best of a pen of superb Texels from Messrs I D & S S Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge with others at £254.00 and £194.00.

Zwartbles to £225.00 for a huge pair from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle -an-Dinas.

Suffolks to £220.50 for the best of a short run from Mr B Roth of Redruth.

Further Texels to £190.00 for a big single from Mr P McAnulty of St Austell and £186.00 for a pair from Messrs B N & R Hoskins of Silverwell, Truro.

Dorsets to £190.00 for Messrs A M & V R Pascoe of Helston, and £186.00 for a quality penful from Mr D J Lobb of St Austell.

Suffolk Mules to £185.00 and £174.00 for Messrs Watson-Smyth Farms Ltd of Padstow and Charollais to £181.00 for a medium bodied ewe from the same vendor.

North Country Mules to £168.00 for Mr S Bucknell of Newquay. A handful of Rams forward, topping at £179.00 for a single from Messrs G P & A S Crisp of Stithians and £168.00 for a Texel from Messrs Bucknell.

A few pens of 2T (sheep) forward topping at £175 twice, firstly for a pair of Texels from Messrs S J Dustow & Son and a single from Mr J A Morphew.

Store Sheep

A tidy entry across the board with a good run of couples in this week and also seeing a number of new season store lamb coming through.

Mr S G Collins of St Newlyn East, Newquay sold a pair of Continental store hoggs to £132, followed by a single Suffolk new season store from Mr B Roth of Tolgus Mount, Redruth at £130.

Messrs A M and V R Pascoe of Helston sold a pair of new season Dorsets at £129, whilst a tremendous trade for couples saw singles selling to £230 on behalf of Mrs S A Scholes of Redruth.

Double couples to £335 for a Continental outfit with well grown month-old lambs for Messrs G Nickells of Redruth, followed by Mrs S A Scholes at £305 and doubles from Mr D Hoskins of Helston topping at £295.
