AN Indian restaurant staged a community party in Newquay to celebrate one of the most important festivals in the Muslim calendar.
Zaman’s in Henver Road laid on a feast and an array of desserts to mark Eid at Quintrell Downs Village Hall, which was attended by more than 300 guests including St Austell and Newquay MP Noah Law and mayor Cllr Drew Creek.
Eshan ‘Mo’ Miah, with help from the Zaman’s team, laid on a street food menu that included samosa, spring rolls, traditional Bengali shingara, chicken tikka biryani and bombay mix.
Mo’s wife Naz organised a dessert station that offered various treats such as cupcakes, cakes, dessert pots, popcorn bags and candy floss. Goody bags were also available for the guests to take some treats home.
Various attractions were organised to keep the guests entertained. Ed Byrne from the Byrne Black Belt Academy set up a chopping board for guests to test out their karate chop, which was a hit.
John Fernley from the Newquay Chess Club brought along a life size chess board, which was so popular he had to get mini chess boards out due to the demand.
Heidi Mercer and Pete from the Cornwall Digital Media Co supplied a photobooth to help create memories. Sanjida Ananna kept all the ladies entertained by providing traditional henna art for their hands.
Eid Al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, remembers the prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son when God ordered him to.
On the day muslims celebrate with their family and friends with food and gifts.
The community Eid party was the second Zaman’s has organised. There are plans to stage an even bigger celebration next year, which Drew and Noah have said they will support.
Naz said: “I want to say a huge thank you to all our friends and Cornwall families for joining us to celebrate Eid.
“It was such a wholesome day and I loved watching everyone coming together eating and enjoying family time. This defines Eid for me.
“A massive thank you to the Zaman’s team. They always come through for me no matter what.
“Thank you to the Mayor of Newquay Drew Creek and MP for Newquay Noah Law for joining us. Thank you to Ed Byrne for teaching everyone how to break boards, John Fernley for getting everyone into chess was an absolute hit Thank you to Pete and Heidi for the Photo booth, which also another hit.
“Thank you to my boys for helping me set-up and welcoming everyone. I couldn’t have done any of it without everyone’s help.

“Seeing this success both the Mayor and MP have promised that they will both help take this wonderful celebration of food, community and togetherness to the next level.”
