A community garden in Newquay has been officially recognised as one of the country’s best parks for the fourth year in a row.
Newquay Orchard has once again received the coveted Green Flag Award after achieving the international quality mark for parks and green spaces. The seven-acre community green space has been recognised for what it brings to the town.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
Charlotte Hill, CEO at Newquay Orchard, said: “This award is testament to the dedication and hard work of staff, volunteers and our many supporters that we continue to achieve this prestigious award, and we fly the flag with pride.
“We look forward to continuing to promote the vital importance of green spaces to promote connection between people and nature, health and wellbeing and positive climate action”
Newquay Orchard celebrated its fourth Green Flag Award with a community event on Tuesday, July 30, which was attended by Newquay mayor Drew Creek.
Drew said: “Newquay Community Orchard is such a wonderful resource for the town, it has been a pleasure to see it develop over the years to embody the heart of our community, and this is all down to the incredible work by the staff and volunteers.”
Newquay Orchard has been created by around 1000 volunteers over the last 10 years, to create a sanctuary for people in Newquay to learn, relax and connect.
Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Newquay Community Orchard on achieving a Green Flag Award.
“Newquay Community Orchard is a vital green space for communities in Newquay to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and it provides important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.”
“We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award, everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.
“It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the Green Flag Award standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected.”
