Supermarket restaurants in Truro and Penzance face the axe following Sainsbury’s announcement that it plans to close all 61 of its remaining cafes.

The company also proposes closing its remaining patisserie, hot food and pizza counters, making their products available elsewhere in store, and reducing senior management roles by 20 per cent.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “This was a difficult decision and not taken lightly,” adding that “the majority of Sainsbury’s most loyal shoppers do not use the cafés regularly, and cafés and food halls run by specialist partners are becoming more and more popular”.

The spokesperson added: “We are supporting the colleagues affected in any way we can, including exploring redeployment opportunities.”
