Members of Falmouth Golf Club raised £11,314.61 during 2024 to support the work of a Cornish charity that provides specialist support to bereaved children.

Club’s captains Phil Jones (men’s) and Toni Novent (ladies’) were inspired to support Penhaligon’s Friends after learning about the work it undertakes to support more than 1,000 children and young people across the county who have lost someone special each year.

The money was raised through a series of events during the year, including the Captains’ Charity Day and the Captains’ Drive In.

“Toni had the idea to work with Penhaligon’s Friends, so we met with them and were absolutely bowled over by the charity's work,” said Phil. “We were in no doubt that this would be an excellent cause to support during our Captains’ year.”

Julie Parker, chief executive officer of Penhaligon’s Friends, said: “We are thrilled to have received this incredible donation from Falmouth Golf Club. It will fund the creation and distribution of hundreds of bespoke postal grief packs for the children and families referred to us for support during 2025 and 2026.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone at the club for their hard work and generosity. A very special thank you goes to club captains Phil and Toni, and junior captain Henry Cooper, for choosing to support Penhaligon’s Friends during their year.

“We are always looking for support from Cornish businesses, individuals, schools, and clubs to ensure we can continue our mission to support bereaved children across Cornwall into the future.”

Penhaligon’s Friends was formed in 1995 to identify and address the needs of Cornwall’s bereaved children, by a forum representing organisations including CRUSE, CLIC, Children’s Hospice South West, Macmillan and more.

Its support includes telephone information and advice, home visits, family and teen support groups, memory days, one-to-one sessions and school support. Services are free and available regardless of when the person died.
