A Truro couple who worked tirelessly for their community have been remembered at the annual Truro Civic Awards.
John Tann received a posthumous award on behalf of his late parents at the presentation evening at Truro Methodist Church on Friday evening. Ronnie and Sue Tann died months apart in 2024, and were renowned for their efforts on the Trelander estate, where Ronnie had lived his entire life.
They were among 19 men, women, children and groups to be presented with certificates by city mayor Cllr Carol Swain and Malcolm Bell, chairman of Truro Civic Society, following public nominations.
Youngsters Nathaniel Hall, Tobias Newlyn-Jewell and Elliott Ethan Wills were rewarded respectively for organising school litter picks, fundraising for the Sunrise suicide awareness charity and maintaining a positive attitude in the face of health challenges.
Group awards were presented to NCI St Agnes Head Coast Watch and Cornwall Blood Bikes, a team of volunteer riders providing out-of-hours support to NHS partners by making vital deliveries of blood, pathology samples, medication and donor breast milk.
John Larke, leader of Truro Male Choir, received his award and was serenaded by his singers, while Laura Calcraft was recognised for her work with Kenwyn Bellringers and St John Ambulance. Warrant Officer Dave Hartnett was rewarded for his lengthy contribution to the Combined Cadet Forces (CCF) at Penair School.
Event organiser Paul Caruana described the evening as “an emotional occasion”, adding: “Without volunteers, our city would be worse off. This event plays an important part in making sure those who work hard for their community get the recognition they deserve.”
The evening was emceed by Cllr Bert Biscoe and proceedings began with a performance by the One Voice choir.
