A new Afro beauty hub has opened in Truro’s Pydar Mews, representing an expansion for owner Sisi Mustefa who previously ran the business from home in Falmouth.
The Ethio Queen Braids & Beauty salon enjoyed an official opening night on Friday. Sisi claims it is the first in Cornwall dedicated to afro hair styles including braids and dreadlocks, traditional treatments, contemporary services and specialist products previously unavailable in Cornwall.
In addition, it will have a space for local black creators and makers to showcase and sell their wares, a networking system for black-owned businesses, and a social hub where community can come to share tips, tricks and services.
Sisi, 34, hopes to be able to host classes for parents who may struggle with their children's textured hair. She has previously delivered these for charities in the South West to much success.
Sisi ran a salon in her native Ethiopia, where she met her husband – Cornwall-raised construction worker David Reis. They returned to Cornwall three years ago.
“When I was working from home, customers were coming from all over Cornwall, because there were not many hair stylists familiar with our kind of hair and they were having to travel,” said Sisi.
“I chose Truro for my salon because it is central, with easy access to Penzance, St Austell and beyond. And while I was restricted to braids at the house, here I can do so much more.”
Her services are not restricted to people of colour: “So far, 50 per cent of my clients are white. They love the hair braids – and all are welcome.”
“This is a real milestone moment for a previously splintered and uncatered-for community,” added David. “Pydar Mews is a real asset to Truro, offering a fantastic and affordable opportunity for independent shops at the heart of the city.”
