WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION (TUESDAY)

Brixham 2 St Austell 0

PROMOTED St Austell suffered their sixth defeat in eight league games on Tuesday night when a goal in each half bagged Brixham the points.

It was a disappointing result for Chris Knight’s men only four days after earning a 2-0 victory at home to Wellington. The absence of key strikers Adam Carter and Curtis Damerell is not helping their cause.

There was little to choose between the sides in a tight first half, but a Jaden Maslen strike a minute before the break gave Brixham a crucial advantage.

St Austell enjoyed plenty of possession in the second half but they struggled to carve out many opportunities and their hopes of getting back into the game were dashed when substitute Tom Mortimore doubled Brixham’s lead in the 74th minute.

St Austell, who are 17th in the 20-team division, will have been relieved to know following Wednesday night’s results that all of the sides around them lost across the midweek games.

Neighbours St Blazey, a place above, were beaten 2-0 by ever-improving Ivybridge Town, last year’s SWPL Premier East winners.

The third of the four Cornish outfits in the league – Torpoint Athletic had no midweek game, while bottom side Welton Rovers were thrashed 6-0 at high-flying Brislington.

Wellington, who have played all nine of their league games away from home due to cricket at ….. were thrashed 5-1 at mid-table Shepton Mallet, a sixth defeat in the row in the league. That after winning two of their first three games.
