NATIONAL LEAGUE TWO (WEST)

Camborne 52 Macclesfield 25

THE Cornishmen made a solid start to their National Two West season with an eight-try victory over Macclesfield at the Recreation Ground.

The home side included new signings Kyle Moyle and CJ Boyce in the back line whilst Jack Andrew and Dan Marais made their debuts together in the second row.

In addition, young back row Kaea Griffiths got a first taste of senior action from the bench in the final quarter.

Playing up the slope, the Cherry and Whites led 17-13 at the break following touchdowns from hooker Ben Priddey, centre Connor Gilbert and number eight Aden Brassington who was returning from a long injury lay off. Josh Matavesi added a conversion.

After the interval the visitors briefly led before ‘Town’ turned on the style by running in five sparkling long range tries to notch 35 unanswered points.

Man of the match Brassington added two tries to complete his hat-trick, whilst influential centre Matavesi, full-back Harry Larkins and left winger Alex Ducker also crossed. Fly-half Moyle, who had taken over the kicking duties, landed five conversions.

Macclesfield bagged a late try to take a losing bonus point with them on the long trip back to Cheshire.

Camborne’s first away outing this Saturday is the small matter of a trip to neighbours Redruth who were 29-27 winners in Somerset at Hornets thanks to a last-minute 35-metre penalty from Dean Wills.

The Reds, who had led 19-17 at the Nest at half-time scored tries through Jamie Prisk (2), Luke Johnson and Matt Pritchard. Wills converted three of the tries.

The kick-off at the Recreation Ground is at 2.30pm.

REGIONAL ONE SOUTH WEST

St Austell 14 Barnstaple 29

PRE-SEASON promotion favourites Barnstaple were made to work hard by a resolute Saints side at Tregorrick Park on Saturday.

The home side got off to the best possible start with an early try from flanker Hector Bright, converted by scrum-half Matt Shepherd.

The Saints failed to capitalise on some good chances and it was the visitors who grabbed the next score through number eight Brandon Moore to make it 7-5. Flanker Ryan Smale went over with the clock almost on 40 to give Barnstaple a narrow 10-7 lead at the break.

With the heavens opening, the visitors looked to their big pack to take control in a dominant second half display that delivered three tries. A penalty try set the tone and that was quickly followed by another seven points through lock Arthur Marks, converted by Jordan Petherbridge. A second from Brandon Moore took the score to an unassailable 29-7.

The Saints never gave up and finished the game with a following move that saw replacement centre George Tregilgas crash over for a converted try to make the final score 29-14.

The Saints make the long trek up to the Forest of Dean next week, when they will seek their first points of the season away at Lydney (3pm).
