Penryn 21 Pirates Amateurs 30

LEADERS Pirates Amateurs got the job done as they picked up a bonus-point victory at the Memorial Ground against a hard-working Penryn side.

Lock Jack Truen grabbed a first half try for Penryn, which was converted by full-back Rob Banks, but scores from scrum-half Rhodri McAtee and lock Ben Martin, plus two penalties kicked by full-back Ben Wragg, made the score 16-7 in favour of the Pirates at the break.

The Borough scored two more tries in the second period through centre James Salisbury and hooker Ryan Burley, whilst wing John Tyler and McAtee crossed the line for the visitors, with both scores being converted by Wragg.

Commenting after the game, Pirates head coach Murray Westren said: “The Memorial Ground at Penryn is a tough place to go, and they are a proud outfit.

“It was a good win nonetheless, and despite lacking a little cohesion at times the overall effort and physicality was very good.

“In particular, there were a couple of spells either side of half-time when we managed to put some good rugby together and, importantly, get what proved a decent lead in the game.”

The Pirates Amateurs are next in action at home to Tavistock on Saturday, March 22 (2.30pm).
