Cornwall Grand Prix Race Series
FORTY-ONE members of Hayle runners made the long trip up the A30 to Launceston on Sunday, September 1 to tackle the Treggy 7.
The race started in Launceston town square, where participants were treated to a fast start on a downhill first mile.
The route subsequently became an undulating one, including the small matter of a half mile uphill stretch to the village of Tregadillett. After leaving the village at mile four, the final section of the race was largely downhill with a spectacular finish in the grounds of the castle.
The Hayle men’s and women’s teams both did phenomenally well, with both teams taking first place. Emma Paull, Fiona Gamble, Anna Goodman, Julie Towers, Corinne Gerrard, and Zoe Renowden made up the winning women’s team, with Jordan Morant, Daniel Costello, Liam O’Neill, Neil Hayhurst, Mark Williams, and Dominic Turton scooping first place for the men. A number of the ‘Green Army’ took home age category prizes, including: Emma Paull (Women 35-39) – first (Emma was also third woman in the race overall); Zoe Renowden (Women 40-44) – third; Kelly Bills (Women 45-49) – third; Corinne Gerrard (Women 50-54) – third; Julie Towers (Women 60-64) – second; Jordan Morant (Men under 35) – third; Neil Hayhurst (Men 40-44) – third; Ian Curnow (Men 50-54) – third; Mark Williams (Men 55-59) – second; Jon Eldon (Men 60-64) – first; Chunky Penhaul (Men 75-79) – first; Stewart Townend (Men 80-plus) – second. Hayle Runners would like to say a massive well done to everybody who took part, no matter what time they ran. Everybody put in a terrific effort on a hot and humid day!
BOXING
ST COLUMB Boxing Club had two wins from two bouts in Devon on the Legends show in Plymouth on Saturday, August 31.
First up was Riley Murphy boxing Jago Flynn from Newquay Boxing Academy with the bout starting at a fast pace with both boxers having success.
But it was later in the first round when Riley found another gear and pushed that little harder to take the first round.
The second round much of the same really with the St Columb boxer pushing the Newquay opponent on his back foot.
Riley pushed on again forcing the referee to stop the action to give the Newquay boxer a standing eight count.
The referee allowed the boxing to carry on into the third stanza, but the bout finished with St Columb boxing club unanimously beating the Newquay boxing academy boxer by winning all three rounds.
Later in the evening, Max Browning boxed James Payne from Mayflower Boxing Club in Plymouth, who had previously beat Max by split decision on a Cornwall v Devon show.
Max felt he could have done better so the St Columb club pushed for a rematch, and got their wish.
Max boxed much better, taking the first round with scoring shots to head and body.
The second round was the same as the first with Max coming out on top.
The last round saw James come out with more punches than he had previously thrown to try get back into it, but at the end it was Max that came out the winner unanimously on the scorecards.
Reflecting on the evening, head coach Paul Doust said: “The three St Columb coaches were very proud of the boxers and can see all the hard work paying off, so long may it continue!”
