Grampound Bowling Club

IT HAS been a busy few weeks at Grampound Bowling Club with many club competitions and matches being played.

Saturday, July 27 saw the 13th Frank Way Memorial Shield being played with 23 players taking part in a knockout competition. 

There were lots of great bowling on the green and the bowlers also enjoyed a Faith Plate tea and pasties. 

The first semi-final saw Zac Busby beat Joyce Barrett and the other semi-final saw Dave Geal beat Angie Hiett. 

The final saw Zac beat Dave 14-7. 

The trophy presentation took place on the green with Norman Way thanking all the bowlers for taking part in the competition and to the ladies’ in the kitchen for helping with the food. The trophies were presented by Audrey Way, Frank’s wife.

Wednesday, July 31 saw Grampound take on the Vice Presidents. 

There were five rinks of triples played with a break halfway through when the bowlers enjoyed a pasty supper. Grampound won two and drew one of the five rinks, with the Vice Presidents winning overall.

Thursday, August 1 was the ladies’ Tippett Shield which was moved to this date after the original date was cancelled due to bad weather.

On Saturday, August 10 it was the men’s Rhoades Pairs and ladies’ Thomas Pairs and there were some really close games played in both the first round and semi-final.

The finals were played on Finals Day on Sunday, September 1, and saw Elliott Wells and Dave Juleff vs Frances Browne and Nigel Harris in the Men’s Pairs and Emma Wells and Evelyn Busby vs Lisa Stubbs and Joyce Barrett in the Ladies’ Pairs.

Porthpean Golf Club by Martyn Wonnacott

THE main event of the week was on Saturday, August 17 with Michael Rooney's Captain's Day, his third, and his last, he says. 

A good field played a Stableford over 18 holes with a ‘Shotgun’ start. In a tight finish, the Captain's Cup was won by Paul Crowther with 38 points on countback from Dave Parsall, Ian Kerslake and Nathan Fitzpatrick in second, third and fourth. 

Steve Sloggett was a point back in fifth, a point ahead of Gary Sullivan who had the best gross score outside the top five. 

Nearest-the-pin prizes went to Brett Wilson on the third, Keith Grigg on the eighth and the seventeenth in two, Nathan Fitzpatrick on the ninth in three strokes, Dave Cunningham on 11 and Vince Dymock on 16. 

Jim Oliver had the longest drive on 13 and Will Mee carded the best score for handicaps over 24 to win the Rabbits Cup. Just three twos were recorded.

In the Ladies’ competition, Teresa Phillips scored 42 points to win by a distance from Annette Ewings in second and Jackie Oliver in third.

The seniors Monthly Medal for August took place on the Tuesday (August 13) with Paul Crowther winning overall with a nett 64, on countback from Chris Maggs and Michael Taylor in first and second in Division One. 

Rob Maycock took third spot with a nett 66 and the lowest gross of 74. Division Two winner Ron May also scored a nett 64, a stroke ahead of Peter Taylor in second place and three clear of Keith Yelland in third. Just three twos were recorded.

The ladies held a Better-Ball Stableford competition on Wednesday, August 14 with Annette Ewings and Jackie Oliver scoring 40 points to win by five points from Teresa Phillips and Carol Fitzhenry in second place. Julie Bradbury and Ann Mee were third with 34 points.

Meanwhile, also on Wednesday, the men had a Stableford in a ‘Bakers Dozen’ format, with players discarding the five worst hole scores on their card. 

Nathan Fitzpatrick ended up with 32 points to win by four from Dave Parsall in second place. Vince Averill scored 24 points for third.

The seniors welcomed a team from Whitsand Bay on Monday, August 19 for the home leg of the series friendlies and were able to secure a 4.5-1.5 victory.

On Tuesday, the seniors played out a Stableford with a ‘Waltz’ variation. Three-man teams counted one score on the first hole, two on the second and all three on the third. 

The team comprising Chris Maggs, John Berryman and Barry Carhart scored 77 points to win by a point from the next three teams, the best of which were Ian Rothwell, Ron May and Keith Yelland, followed by Neil Goodwin, Graham Bunt and Biff Griffin in third. Six twos were recorded.

Peter Fox won the latest round of the men's Summer League which was in a strokeplay format. His nett 68 was a stroke ahead of Robin Charnock and Ian Smith in second and third on countback. 

Ben Bond scored a nett 70 and the lowest gross of 74 for fourth, a stroke clear of Derek Williams and Steve Arthur in fifth and sixth. Five twos were recorded.

Also on Wednesday the ladies played a ‘Yellow Peril’ Stableford where teams of three count the two best scores on each hole with one of the scores having to be from the yellow ball that is played with by each player in turn. 

The team comprising Carol Fitzhenry, Jackie Oliver and Teresa Phillips scored 76 points to win by seven from Sher Meetings, Julie Bradbury and Roma Cook in second place.

The seniors welcomed a team from Mawgan Porth Golf Club, formerly Merlin, on the Friday for the home leg of the friendly series and were handed a distinctly unfriendly 4-2 drubbing.

Meanwhile, also on Friday, the P.I.G.S. made the long trek to Okehampton in mid-Devon for their latest outing. 

Paul Farquhar won over from Derek Williams and Gary Sullivan in second and third on countback while Geoff Miller got the coveted Pink Hat for the lowest points score of the day.

The ladies held their Monthly Medal on Saturday, August 24 with captain Bev Sullivan claiming top spot with best gross and nett scores of 87 and 71. Two strokes behind, Jackie Oliver and Carol Fitzhenry were second and third on countback.

OVER 840 members and visitors took part in St Austell Golf Club’s Festival Week which ran from Saturday, August 17 to Sunday, August 25.

Despite the unsettled weather at times, plenty of great scores were recorded.
