ATHLETICS

By Hayle Runners

The 13th race of the 14-event Cornish Grand Prix Race Series – the Marazion 10K – took place on Sunday, September 29.

The event is organised by Hayle Runners and sees participants run a one-loop, left-turn-only race starting below Trevenna Square in Marazion.

With only 131 metres of elevation, the race is basically flat by Cornish standards!

Sunday saw weather warnings in place for both wind and rain, which meant the 10K was definitely a challenge, but support on the route from marshals and hardy spectators was still fantastic despite the conditions. Over 480 valiant runners braved the weather to take part in the race, which was a phenomenal turnout!

Daniel Soltys from Cornwall AC took first place and was first man home in a phenomenal time of 32:32. He was closely followed by Steve Reynolds from Truro Running Club in second, and Freddie Fielding from Cornwall AC in third place.

First woman home was Anna Harrold from Truro Running Club, who completed the race in an amazing 35:54.

Katie Knowles – also from Truro Running Club – took second, with Katie Walker from Cornwall AC was third for the women.

As it’s a Hayle Runners race, the Marazion 10K is a whole-club effort and those members who weren’t completing the course were still out in force, dotted along the route to provide support as race marshals, as well as managing the water stop, staffing Race HQ, and helping with setting up and taking down the course.

This required extra fortitude in the terrible weather and the race couldn’t have been run without all hands on deck.

Race Director, Diane Warren, said: “A huge well done to all of our members who ran Marazion 10k. A huge thank you as well to everybody who helped on the day. Your cheering and encouragement was second to none. For a lot of people this was their first race and hopefully we’ve made it one to remember and not only because of the weather. Hayle Runners, you are awesome!”

BOXING

St Columb Boxing Club

WE HAVE been busy again with another two boxers out and about, and both recorded victories writes club coach Paul Doust.

Max Browning was in Wales on Friday, September 6, boxing Jenson Burbrige form Swansea and was successful.

Then on Saturday, September 14 at the Penventon Hotel in Redruth, Archie Scott boxed Brodie Bittle of Intense Boxing Plymouth.

The bout started with both boxers going about their work with Archie being the more forward fighter, trying to get ahead with scoring blows and the Plymouth boxer trying to back off him with counter punches.

The two styles worked for both boxers and made it an even bout, but in the later part of the second the St Columb boxer seemed to be fitter and started landed the more telling blows. This seemed to continue into the third round.

The bout did go back and forth with both young boys giving it all. Archie won on a split decision, to the delight of all the travelling fans.

St Columb Boxing Club entered Max Browning in to the National Championships, and his first bout of this challenge was against Liam Mortimer of Bodmin Boxing Club on the same card.

The first round saw Max be the more active lad with great footwork, putting him in and out of range as he scored freely.

The second stanza was very similar to the first with Max scoring again and again, but Mortimer was having a little more success than previously.

The last round saw the Bodmin boxer having his best round, coming out with a will to win and try claw it back, but at the final bell Browning got the win to take him through as the Cornish champion, and onto the quarter-final.

As coaches we are overwhelmed with our success at the moment and will keep doing their best to bring the boxers to another level.
