Grampound Bowling Club
GRAMPOUND Bowling Club ended their 2024 season on Saturday, September 21 when they held their Closing Day and Barker Cup, a drive in which 20 players took part.
Despite some places having torrential rain, Grampound missed the wet weather altogether.
Afterwards, everyone gathered back in the clubhouse for refreshments including a cream tea. The winner of the Barker Cup 2024 was Francis Browne.
The club will hold its annual end of season meal and trophy presentation evening at Carlyon Bay Golf Club on October 26.

Newquay Golf Club
ON TUESDAY, August 27, 19 ladies teed up in showery conditions to compete for the President’s Bowl.
The winner with an impressive 40 points was Pat Greenwood, closely followed by Annie Lobb (39) and Sue Phillips (38).
Of the eight ladies who competed in the nine-hole Stableford, three came in with 18 points but the winner on countback from Jo Toms and Judith Reseigh was Meg Platton.
The Men’s RNLI Charity Open on Saturday, August 31 was won by two points by home favourite Beau Lonergan-Bowe from compatriot Josh Eyre.
The results were as follows: 1 Beau Lonergan-Bowe (Newquay) – 42pts; 2 Josh Eyre (Newquay) – 40; 3 John Treslove (Newquay) – 40; Carl White (Lanhydrock) – 39; 5 Phillip Baron – 39.
WHILE some ladies played in the monthly medal, others took to the course to play in the revamped Alpha Cup on Tuesday, September 3.
Originally over 18 holes and for 36 handicaps, it is now played over 11 holes for 30-54 handicaps.
The winner with an outstanding 32 points, and a reduction in handicap, was Bridie Jones. Eileen Phipps was second with 24 points and Chris Cummons was third with 22 points.
Sally Stacey won the Medal with a nett 76 ahead of Katie Champion (77) and Georgia Allen (78).
THE highlight of the week was the RNLI Open on Thursday, September 5.
Twenty teams of three with two scores to count took to the course in atrocious conditions, and while some made it to the 18th hole, many finished on the 11th.
As a result, a prize was awarded to the best 11-hole score which was achieved by a team from St Enodoc made up of Skye Robinson, Maria Buckley and Lauren Chapman with an impressive 51 points.
The 18-hole honours went to Newquay ladies Annie Lobb, Debbie Cain and Catherine Kromholc with 80 points, five ahead of Perranporth trio Nikki Hodge, Sarah Shobrook and Jackie Mallett. Sue Sykes, Janet Barker and Pat Thom’s 72 points was enough for third.
As a result of the day’s fundraising efforts of which £360 was raised in the raffle, a cheque for £982 was presented to Christine Hunter, chair of the fundraising committee, accompanied by Hilary Payne and Jan Evison.
The ladies from the RNLI also took £410 from the sale of cards and other items of stationary.
Well done to the ladies for their support of this worthy cause.
The Men’s Asher Cup was held on Saturday, September 7 with the results as follows: Division One: 1 Zac Davy-Taylor – nett 64; Raju Roka – 66; Matthew Milburn – 67. Division Two: 1 Luke Foster – nett 65; 2 Thomas May – 65; 3 James Callister – 66. Division Three: 1 Dexter Cater – nett 59; Sean Millward – 68; Darren Ivall – 68.
THE main competition on Tuesday, September 10 was the ladies’ county voucher, which was won by four points by Pat Thom from Sue Sykes on 36. The rest of the top four were made up of Gillian Tregay (34) and Debbie Cain (32).
In the nine-hole Stableford, Anne Poole won with 21 points with Judith Reseigh (19) second.
On Tuesday, September 17, in perfect conditions, the ladies had the choice of either an 18-hole or a nine-hole Stableford.
The 18 -hole competition was won by Lorna Parfitt, on countback from Janet Cox and Gillian Tregay, all with 32 points.
The honours in the nine-hole event went to Bridie Jones with 17 points, one ahead of runner-up Diana Luxon.
Two days later saw the senior ladies head to Trevose for an away day organised superbly by senior lady captain, Rose Howe.
The ladies played the nine-hole course and then headed to the clubhouse for a much welcome meal of fish and chips. The weather was perfect with wall to wall sunshine and a 24 degree temperature.
The winner with 28 points was Meg Platton. Sandra Lloyd was second with 25 points, on countback from Judith Reseigh. The prize for the ‘twos’ went to Joyce Cain as the only person to achieve one. A big thank you to Rose for organising the day.

THE Sunday Strokeplay competition on Sunday, September 22, was won overall by Samuel Twiggy with a nett 64, a stroke ahead of Division One winner Keith Grigg.
Peter Fox and Michael Rooney were split on countback in second and third with nett 67, while a stroke behind on 68, Jeremy Maude had the lowest gross score of 74.
Division Two was won by Brett Wilson with a nett 66, three clear of Lee Varney in second place. A stroke back, Peter Brown and Owen Johnson were third and fourth on countback. There were three twos recorded plus a ‘hole-in-one’ for Brian Andrew on the 11th.
The ladies also held a medal competition on the same day with winner Teresa Phillips carding a nett 66, a stroke ahead of Jackie Oliver who also had the lowest gross score of 86.
It was a Stableford for the seniors on Tuesday the 17th where Michael Meares scored 38 points to win on countback from Division One winner Mike Hackett.
Robert Mallett and Paul Farquhar were second and third on countback with 36 points.
Division Two winner and third overall, Peter Renowden, scored 37 points, two clear of Biff Griffin, Mike Randolf and Richard Holmes in second, third and fourth on countback. There were no twos meaning a rollover.
The ladies cooked up a 'Bakers Dozen' the next day with Annette Ewings ending up with 32 points from her 13 holes, a point ahead of Teresa Phillips in the runner-up spot. Jackie Oliver edged out Carol Fitzhenry for third on countback, both with 27 points.
Paul Farquhar was in the frame again on the Wednesday in the latest round of Summer League when he notched up 37 points to win by a point from Dave Parsall and Mike Hackett in second and third on countback.
Graham Bunt grabbed fourth with 35 points, while three players on 34 fought over the two remaining league points with Alan Plaice and Karl Rance in fifth and sixth. Simon Hartley was the one to lose out as three twos were recorded.
On Thursday the seniors launched into the first leg of their grandly-titled "Cornwall versus The Rest Of The World", an annual event.
Seven pairs from each side, Cornishmen and non-Cornish, played in a better-ball matchplay format with the result a 4-3 victory for the aliens.
Friday saw the latest outing for the P.I.G.S, this time at China Fleet.
Mo Frame won with 39 points from Danny Lawer and Tony Kellow in second and third.
