THE first week of April was a busy one for Newquay’s lady golfers.

The ladies played a friendly at Falmouth on Friday, April 4 which resulted in an honourable draw.

Two days later, in near perfect weather, the prestigious Atlantic and Headland Cups were played for.

These are open competitions so ladies from around Cornwall and even Devon headed for Newquay. The Atlantic Cup (Medal) saw Newquay ladies take the honours. The winner with a nett 72 was Lesley Pocklington. Debbie Cain was 2nd with a nett 76, on count-back from Abi Crosswood.

The Headland Cup (Stableford) saw the honours go to Perranporth's Niki Wraight with 38 points. Dawn Emmerson was 2nd with 37 points and Susan Hodge was 3rd with 36 points, both Newquay ladies.

Tuesday, April 8’s action saw the ladies have the choice of an 18-hole Medal or a 9-hole Stableford.

Jan Barker won the Medal with a magnificent nett 67, six shots clear of Debbie Cain (73) who as one ahead of Lesley Pocklington.

In the nine-hole Stableford, Meg Platton was first with 21 points, one ahead of Bridie Jones.

Anne Poole was third with 19 points, on count-back from Jo Toms and Eileen Phipps.

PAUL Farquhar won the final round of the seniors’ Winter League with 32 points over 14 holes but his maximum league points weren't enough to overhaul Steve Arthur, who completed a unique double after winning the men's version the week before.

Peter Renowden and Barry Carhart scored 29 points for second and third on countback while, a point back, Gerry Dahlstrom and Steve Arthur were similarly tied in fourth and fifth. Stephen Bray, Mike Randolph, Len Broad and Lionel Johns all scored 27 to fill positions five to nine with the final point going to Tony Kellow who had the best of six players on 26. Peter Talling scored the only two of the day.

For the first event of the summer programme the men's section held a "Baker's Dozen" for the starter course.

Steve Bennetto scored 35 points from his best 13 holes, two ahead of Paul Farquhar in second place. A point back Mike Partridge scored 32 points for third, a point clear of Stuart Ellliot in fourth. Four twos were recorded.

The ladies ran both 9-hole and an 18-hole medals on Wednesday with Bev Sullivan scoring best gross and nett figures of 89 and 73 to win on countback from Liz Andrew and Teresa Phillips in second and third. Jenny Botto won the nine-hole version with a nett 40, five clear of runner-up Jackie Oliver.

The Seniors launched their summer programme of friendly matches on Thursday, April 3 and first up was a home fixture against Looe-Bin-Down. In breezy conditions the home team made a winning start with a 5-1 victory.

The Monthly Medal for April was held over the first weekend of the month and was won overall by Stephen Bray with a nett 65, on countback from Division One winner Michael Rooney.

Peter Bradbury was second on nett 68, a stroke clear of Steve Arthur and Tony Kellow in third and fourth with Kellow carding the lowest gross score of 77 to take the Clive Rosevear Cup.

Division Two winner was Gerry Dahlstrom with a nett 67, a stroke ahead of Robert Mallet in second and two clear of Nathan Fitzpatrick in third. Division Three winner and second overall was Len Barrett with nett 65, two ahead of Stephen Smith in second and three clear of Gary in third. Four twos were recorded.
