THE first ‘major’ of the new season, The 3-Club Trophy, was held over the fourth weekend off the month.
The men's champion was Tony Shufflebotham with 39 points, on countback from Division One winner and defending champion Michael Rooney.
Second, also on countback, was Karl Rance with Steve Arthur two points back in third.
Ray Nancholas scored 35 points to win Division Two by three points from Vince Dymock and Maurice Frame in second and third on countback. Nearest-the-pin prizes went to Michael Rooney on three and eight, Darren Carhart on 11, Steve Sloggett on 12, Vince Dymock on 15 and Karl Rance on 17. Rance, Rooney and Gary Sullivan all registered twos on the third hole.
In the ladies’ competition, Carol Fitzhenry took the top prize with 36 points with Sam Harris and Julie Bradbury second and third on 32 and 30 respectively.
Best front and back nine awards went to Annette Ewings and Bev Sullivan. Debbie Jones got ‘nearest-the-pin’ on 11 and Ann Mee carded the only two on 17.
It was the penultimate round of the Winter League for the seniors on Tuesday, March 18 with Dave Parsall grabbing maximum league points scoring 30 points over 14 holes to win by a point from Steve Arthur in second place.
Gary Sullivan was third with 27, two ahead of five players split on countback in positions four to eight, in order, Peter Talling, John Sweet, Michael Rooney, Graham Bunt and Paul Crowther.
The last two league points went to Aaron Wellington and Ray Nancholas who were the best of eight players on 24. Six twos were recorded.
The following day saw the ladies out to play a ‘Nine-hole Medal’ where a score of nett 32 was enough for Rona Cook to win on countback from Jackie Oliver in second place with the lowest gross of 44. Julie Bradbury was two strokes back in third on nett 30.
Steve Arthur was to the fore again on the same day in the penultimate round of the men's Winter League, hitting the top spot this time to take a two-point lead in the standings with one round to go.
He scored 41 points to win by five from Peter Fox and Mark Clemes in second and third on countback.
Fourth place went to Jim Oliver on 35, on countback from Derek Williams in fifth. The final league point was secured by Paul Farquhar with 34 points and there were seven twos recorded.
The Sunday Stableford on March 23 took on the running of the twice-postponed Biff Griffin Trophy which was originally scheduled for New Year’s Day.
Michael Meares scored 38 points to lift the trophy, beating Division One winner Peter Fox by two points. A point behind, Tony Kellow and Peter Bradbury were second and third on countback.
Vince Averill scored 36 points to take the Division Two crown, a point ahead of Derek Williams and Brett Wilson in second and third on countback. Four twos were recorded.

THE Saints were well beaten on their travels, losing 6.5 to 1.5.

THE spoils were shared as they battled out a 4-4 draw.

NEWQUAY GOLF CLUB
IT WAS a brisk easterly wind that greeted the ladies on Tuesday, March 18, so much so that the 18-hole Stableford was shortened to 11 holes. Balls on landing were rolling all over the place.
On a positive note, it was dry and sunny with the winner, Janet Cox, totalling 16 points. Sally Stacey was second with 15 on count-back from Kathryn Adams.
In the nine-hole Stableford, Diana Luxon won with 13 points and Marilyn Start was second with nine.
The Senior Ladies took to the course two days later to play a Four Ball Better Ball competition over 11 holes. Again, conditions were breezy but dry and sunny.
The winners with 25 points were Sally Stacey and Pauline O'Shea, just ahead of second-placed Diana Luxon and Sandra Lloyd with 24 points.
The men’s Anderson Cup was played for on Saturday, March 22 with Tom Eggins and Rob Walker’s nett 58 enough for victory.
They were three shots ahead of second, third and fourth - Collie Dudley and Neil Dudley, Charlie Phillips and Neil Whitehouse and Rhys Merrell and Dave Adey.
Neil Husband and Dan Foard were fifth on 62.
