Southern League Division One South latest round-up

FALMOUTH Town produced a remarkable late finish to earn a battling point against Malvern Town at Bickland Park last night.

Andrew Westgarth’s men, who were beaten 2-1 at Westbury United on Saturday, were 2-0 down heading into injury-time, the second of which came from Luke Payne on 89 minutes.

But the Cornishmen rallied as first Luke Barner netted before midfielder Andreas Calleja-Stayne did likewise, the second of which came in the 94th minute, to send the majority of the 315-strong crowd wild.

Malvern, who are going for the play-offs, had taken a 56th minute lead through Sam Clark.

The point proved particularly important for Falmouth following their weekend trip to Wiltshire.

Rubin Wilson had drawn Town level in the 26th minute, that five minutes after they had fallen behind with Ben Starr the scorer.

However he grabbed his second 15 minutes from time.

Falmouth remain six points above the bottom four with four games in-hand.

Helston Athletic earned a potentially precious point in their survival bid as they drew 1-1 with fellow strugglers Larkhall Athletic at Kellaway Park.

Matt Cusack’s side have seen a huge turnover of playing personnel in recent weeks, but sub Liam Eddy grabbed an equaliser 20 minutes from time.

Third-placed Mousehole have a five-point cushion over Exmouth Town in the play-off race after thrashing visiting Shaftesbury Town 5-1 in West Cornwall.

The Seagulls, who have played a game more than sixth-placed Exmouth, produced an exhilarating performance at Interiora Parc which saw four different scorers.

Shaftesbury did take a shock lead on 12 minutes through Remus Nixon, but once Hayden Turner equalised on 24 minutes the Seagulls soared.

Tim Nixon put them in front within 60 seconds before he extended their advantage just after the hour.

Oscar Massey made it 4-1 on 65 minutes before sub Will Sullivan rounded off the scoring five minutes from time as they cemented their place in the top five.

All three sides are due to be in action this weekend with 3pm kick-offs.

Helston Athletic will hope for a helping hand from Mousehole as the Seagulls make the relatively short trip by their standards to relegation-threatened Willand Rovers.

Helston themselves have a crunch clash at Thatcham Town who are nine points safety, while Falmouth host a Melksham Town side that are six points off the play-off places.
