Southern League Division One South latest round-up

FALMOUTH Town’s hopes of survival took a massive step forward as they rounded off a remarkable year by moving out of the drop zone.

The Bickland Park outfit won the Western League play-off final against Clevedon Town back in the spring to reach Step Four for the first time, as well as seeing off St Austell to regain the Cornwall Senior Cup.

However, the weekend they produced to end 2024 will long live in the memory.

On Boxing Day they welcomed Cornish rivals Mousehole, and in front of a huge crowd of 1,110, Rubin Wilson’s first half double was enough for victory in Andrew Westgarth’s 400th game in charge.

Two days later they visited Tavistock where a superb first half performance got the job done.

Goals from Luke Barner (12), Rubin Wilson (15) and Olly Walker (43) gave them a 3-0 lead, and although Luke Steer (49) and Jacob Shore (83) set up a thrilling finale, Falmouth held on.

Helston Athletic made it three defeats on the spin after losing 4-0 at Willand Rovers on December 28.

On December 21 they were beaten 2-0 at leaders Willand Rovers before suffering a 2-1 reversal against visiting Exmouth Town on Boxing Day.

Jordan Copp drew the Blues level just before half-time after Ben Steer put the Devonians in front, but Joe Belsten grabbed the winner ten minutes from time.

Up at Willand, Finley Rooke’s double gave the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break before Josh Searle and Rooke’s third rounded off the scoring.

Mousehole bounced back from their Falmouth disappointment by easing past Cribbs 4-0.

The play-off chasing Seagulls scored three times in ten first half minutes through Jack Symons, Hayden Turner and Max Hill, before Mark Goldsworthy added the fourth 20 minutes from the end.
